According to the researchers both at home and overseas, it is easily known that the idioms are universally applied in everyday life. There is a large scale of achievements in recent years, but there are still many things should be done which can lay a solid foundation for better understanding of it. In a word, from the learning of a different type of idiom, it is easy to figure out the essence for the divergent existence. It is not just the product of one factor. The study of Chinese and English idioms has numerous magnificent in facing with the opportunities and threats appeared in the course of globalization and information, but the researcher should never change the attitude in the process of figuring out its meaning, function and role, it is the author’s hope that it can develop awareness, understanding, and appreciation of idioms in Chinese and English, including their use in cross-cultural communication.
Because the importance of idiom became much more obvious, the research of idioms came out very early. Nowadays, it had a relatively integrated system after a long time progress. This is the consequence of efforts came from previous generations.
For a relatively a long history, idioms did not attract too much attention from the scholars. The milestone event happened in 1925. Smith’s masterpiece Words and Idioms was published at that time. It focused on the research of original, the basic character and structure of idioms, made a division of origin of idioms and also pays attention to the unique features of structure. This book paid much of attention to the theoretic definition about idioms. Because of the limitation of economy, the author did not pay much attention to the differences between Chinese and English idioms.
Entering 1960s, Ming Su established The comparison of Chinese and English Idioms, discovered a lot of common place between Chinese and English idioms by the analysis of the origin, figure of speech of idioms. In his thought, the difference between Chinese and English idioms was the consequence of cultural differences. This is the first specified work to give a comprehensive introduction about the idioms in different cultural system. The comprehensive research made the better understanding of the relationship between idioms and cultural differences. In further level, it had a definite function in strengthening the communication and cooperation between different countries.
In 1978, a representative work A Study on Chinese Idiomatic Usages was published by Rose in Hong Kong. Following that, quite a few articles and books on English-Chinese idioms emerged in China. Chinese scholars such as Chen Wenbo, in his book English and Chinese Idioms (1982), Yang Zijian & Luan Xuemei, in their article A Contrastive Study of English and Chinese Idioms (1989), Tang Degen in his article Barriers caused by Idioms in Intercultural Communication (2000), and Luo Shiping, in his book A Research on English Idioms (2006), made some significant researches on Chinese and English idioms. Some other scholars had also probed into this study in recent years.
In a long time development, the researches and recognition about idioms in different cultural background had moved into further phase, many meaningful achievements had been made. However, the above studies had only mentioned part of the influence of physical cultural on Chinese and English idioms. They had not made profound and systematic researches on Chinese and English idioms from the perspective of cultural sources. In view of the present inadequate and incomprehensive researches, it is still needed to make more and profound studies of Chinese and English idioms from the perspective of cultural sources. So this essay will find the environmental, cultural and religious reasons by the comprehensive analysis about the cultural differences in Chinese and English idioms.

The paper is approached from a linguistic perspective. The purpose is to analyze a classic idiom from the angle of number, festival and diet. Therefore, the research methods used in this paper involve literature research, statistical research, logic induction and comparative research, and sampling method to provide data as a support. First of all, the literature research is to use literature, including books, pictures, videos, software, and the website and so on, to carry out the research. Secondly, the statistical research is to collect the relative data to make the paper persuasive. Thirdly, the logic induction is to analyze the examples to reach the final conclusion. The five main research methods and other methods will be applied together to carry out the research.
The structure of this essay is that: firstly, the introduction of the definition of idioms, so it is the solid foundation to have a further research about the other aspects of idioms; then the essay has a literature review about the researches both at home and overseas, there are a lot of achievements that have been made. This is also a review about the development course about human’s recognition about idioms in different cultures. Because idioms cover many aspects in the daily life, the essay just take the idioms related to diet, number and festival, in this process of comparison of idioms related to diet, number and festival, the essay will make full use of the method of comparison, definition, describing and quotation to find the differences in environmental, religious and cultural aspects. It is very necessary to know the reason why the differences can be created between Western and Chinese culture. Therefore this essay will make a conclusion of the analysis of idioms to have a better understanding of difference in Western and Chinese culture. In the conclusion, the achievements that have been made will be favored and considered as the foundation for further researches about different aspects of idioms between Chinese and Western culture.
