Good morning! Welcome to Rio de Janeiro. My name is Joachim Cruz, and I'll be your tour guide. I hope you like to have fun as much as I do. In Rio we love to have fun and this is Carnival!
Sugarloaf Mountain is the most famous sight in Rio. The mountain is visible everywhere in the city. Do you think it looks like a loaf of sugar? I think it looks more like a loaf of bread, but Sugarloaf is probably a nicer name. We can ride all the way up to the top. What a view! As you can see, there are hills and mountains all around the city. Many of the people live high up on these hills. Look at the white, sandy beaches.
Now we're in the Center of Rio. For many years, Rio was the capital of Brazil. As you can see, there are a lot of tall skyscrapers. The major banks and stores are located here in the Center, along with many of Brazil's largest companies. Many of these
companies decided to stay in Rio when the capital was moved to Brasilia.
Now we're at the National Museum. You'll see a lot of interesting exhibits about the Indians of Brazil. There are many different Indian tribes in the Amazon. It's difficult to visit them in the Amazon, but you can learn about them at this museum and at the Indian Museum.
Over there you can see our Municipal Stadium. The stadium holds 200,000 people. That's a lot of soccer fans, isn't it. We Brazilians love our soccer!
During Carnival, people dress in strange masks and costumes. Look at the colors! People can dress up as anything they want to. Listen to the music! That's the rhythm of the samba. During Carnival, the parades and parties go on day and night.
Now we're in the part of the city that's called Copacabana. Have you heard of it before? Maybe you've heard of Ipanema, too. There are many large houses here. We're close to the beaches. Look at the orchids and hibiscus in the gardens; there are flowers everywhere.
We've arrived at one of the beaches now. Let's spend a few hours here. Enjoy the sand and sun, but don't get a sunburn. We have a lot to do tonight!
