W. Good evening. Thank you.

M: I see from the information you have sent me that you come from London. You left the Hotel cornfield in 1990.

W: Yes, I worked there for nearly four years. M: Was that a large restaurant.

W: Middle-- sized, about forty tables.

M: I see. Ours is much smaller. We only have twenty five tables and you are expected to look after eight tables normally. W: That' s fine.

M: I'm the restaurant manager and head waiter, so you'll be working directly under me.

W. What will I be responsible for? M. Bringing dishes from the kitchen, serving drinks, and, if necessary, looking after the bills, so you'll be pretty busy.

W: I'm used to that. In my last position we were busy most of the time, especially during the summer.

M: Good. Now, is there anything you'd like to ask about the job?

W: Well, the usual question--what sort of salary are you thinking of paying? M: We pay our waiters a hundred and forty pounds a week, and you'll get your evening meals for free. W: I see.

M: Good. Now let me show you the kitchen first. This way, please. 听第二段材料,回答第5至7题。 M:Morning, Lily!

W:Morning, Bill! How was your vacation? M:Pretty good.

W:What was the weather?

M:Oh, it was wonderful most of the time. W:Didn’t you have any rain?

M:No. We had blue skies every day. W:What did your children do?

M:They played on the beach the whole day and watched TV in the evenings like at

home. They seemed to have had a lot of fun. W:Were you with them the whole time?

M:No. We were lucky. We met a nice couple from New York who had two children exactly

the same age as ours.

W:Oh, that’s really great for the children.

M:That’s true and we took turns taking care of all the children. W:A good arrangement.

M:Yes. In that way we all had several days of complete freedom. It was great. 听第三段材料,回答第8至10题。

On a morning of November 18, an earthquake shook Boston. John Smith, a professor at Harvard University ,felt the quake and woke up. “I rose,” he wrote, “and lit a candle ,looked at my watch ,and found it to be 15 minutes after four.” John Smith

11

went downstairs to the grandfather clock .It had stopped three minutes before ,at 4:11. Except for stopping the clock ,the quake had only thrown a key from the table to the floor.

The clock had stopped because John had put some long glass tubes he was using for an experiment into the case for safekeeping .The quake had shocked the tubes over. John, therefore, had the exact time that the earthquake had hit Boston. He looked at the key on the floor. The quake had thrown it forward in the direction of the quake’s motion by a shock coming from the northwest ,perhaps in Canada. 听第四段材料,回答第11至12小题。 M: Before making a plan for sightseeing trips, I’d be glad to know if you have anything special in mind that you’d like to see.

W: Well, as a matter of fact, we were discussing this question last night. We all spoke of the Great Wall, one of the seven wonders of the world. We wouldn’t want to leave China without seeing that. But how far is it from there?

M: Only about 50 kilometers. Just an hour and a half’s trip by car. We’ll put down the Great Wall then.

W: Good! And we’ve heard quite a lot about the Summer Palace. We’d like to see that, too.

M: All right. The Summer Palace, well, and there are a number of places that I think you’d find interesting, the Temple of Heaven, the Ming Tombs and so on. 听第五段材料,回答第13至15小题。

The word “pub” is the short form for “public house” in Great Britain. It is supposed to be the Englishmen’s favorite meeting place, where they can get together with friends over a pint of beer and talk about football, horse racing, or business. Pubs are usually open from 11 a. m. to midnight.

You may notice that the pub is the Englishmen’s meeting place. It is not quite respectable for a woman to go into a pub alone. She must have a man to go with her. Perhaps that’s partly the reason why pubs depress me --- they are intended mainly to provide for male interests.

Most Englishmen have their favorite local pub, where they can escape from the pressure of family life or work, and if they are lucky they tell their troubles to a pretty bar – girl. Indeed, many men dream of retiring from their 9 to 5 jobs and buying a little country pub, where they imagine they always be the host of a week – long party. 第二节:听取信息

M: Now, Kathy, do you know when the visitors from India are coming?

W: We offered them three choices: the end of March, the middle of April and the beginning of May, and they chose the earliest one, that is good actually with exams coming up in May.

M: And how many are coming? Did you say about 12?

W: Yes, they said 12 at first, but changed to 10 this morning.

M: Good, we have 8 weeks to prepare. Here are my suggestions. On the first day, a welcome party, then they can visit the schools in the district on the second and

third days.

W: We have got to remember this group wants to look at how computers are being used in the classroom.

M: Exactly, so I want to ask Mr. Goodman to give them a talk on this on the afternoon of the third day.

W: That will fit very nicely.

M: And on the last day, they should do some sightseeing. We could take them to the tour of London but many of them have been there already, and Scotland would be too far away.

W: Why not take them for a walk along the coast? It should be interesting. M: Good idea! Kathy, I’m sure they’ll like it.

Practice Makes Perfect

The dramatic ballad student, who later became a great performer, could not stand the repeated boring practice which was to lead to his very success in his career.

As the saying goes, practice makes perfect. Consistent practice can result in perfect performance. Practice is of great importance in doing anything.

Take my personal experience in learning English for example. Three years ago, I had great trouble with listening comprehension. I couldn’t understand the teacher in class. This was obviously due to my lack of practice. To improve my listening, I started to read English aloud every morning and listen to tapes and radio programs every evening. My efforts paid off and in the final examination I did an excellent job in listening.

I strongly believe that practice makes perfect. Whatever we do,we should persist in it and keep on working until we are successful.
