Scientists in Argentina have created the world's first cow with two human genes that will enable it to produce human-like milk.

Genetic engineering was used to introduce the “mothers' milk” genes into the animal before birth, according to the National Institute of Agribusiness Technology in Buenos Aires.

As an adult, the cloned cow “will produce milk that is similar to that of humans”, which will prove “a development of great importance for the nutrition of infants(婴儿)”, said the institute. “The cloned cow, named Rosita ISA, is the first in the world with two human genes that contain the proteins present in human milk,” said the statement.

In April, scientists in China published details of research showing that they had created dairy cows which produced milk containing proteins found in human breast milk. But the Argentine team said the Chinese only introduced one human gene, while their research involved two, meaning the milk will more_closely_resemble that of humans.

“Our goal was to raise the nutrition value of cows' milk by adding two human genes, which do good to the immune system of infants,” said Adrian Mutto, from the National University of San Martin which worked with the institute.

6

Cristina Kirchner, President of Argentina, said the scientific institute made all Argentines proud. She also said that she had rejected the “honor” of having the cow named after her. “They came to tell me that the name is Cristina, but what woman would like to have a cow named after her? It appeared to me to be more proper to call it Rosita.”

Chinese consumers' crazy appetite for luxury goods and services appears unstoppable, with just 2 percent of the Chinese population responsible for one-third of the world's luxury items.

As China's economic miracle develops, the market opportunities for all sorts of luxury goods and services are increasing. Luxury consumption in China now extends ways beyond well-known car, clothing and jewelry brands. For example, the luxury jet market in China is the fastest-growing in the world, even outstripping that of the United States, with a market share of 25 percent. This trend appears to continue, with 20 to 30 percent growth expected in China, compared with only 2 to 3 percent in the US. But more importantly, China's luxury jet market growth represents a major development in the private consumption of luxury items.

China's high-quality red wine market also provides evidence of the growth in private consumption of luxury goods. In 2013, China became the largest market for

7

red wine in the world, even overtaking France, with 1.86 billion bottles consumed in China last year. Over the past five years, China's red wine consumption has grown 136 percent.

According to my ongoing consumer research in this area while working at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, public consumption of such expensive global luxury brands such as Prada and Armani is easily explained by the desire to “gain face” and publicly display social climbing through material possessions. On the other hand, it is “self-reward” that lies behind consumer motivation in this area. Chinese consumers who have experienced rapid financial and economic gains appear particularly prone to the need to reward themselves for their success. But this has little to do with “gaining face” and impressing others and much more to do with the need for personal contentment.

Finally, the growth in private luxury consumption in China is set to continue in part due to the maturity of the Chinese consumer and advancement of Chinese consumer culture generally.

28.What do you think the author would most probably be? A.A news reporter. B.An accountant. C.A professor. D.A conductor.

29.The underlined word “outstripping” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.

A.falling far behind of B.going out of

C.going far ahead of D.keeping pace with

30.What can we learn from Paragraph 2 and 3?

A.China's luxury jet market growth is only 2% to 3%. B.France was once the largest market for red wine in the world before 2013.

C.The luxury jet market in the US shares 25% of the jet consumption in the world.

D.China's red wine consumption has increased to 1.86 billion bottles since 2013.

31.What can be the best title for the passage? A.Future Private Luxury Consumption in China B.Chinese Appetite for Luxury Goods and Services C.The Potential Luxury Jet Market in China D.The Maturity of the Chinese Consumers 答案与解析:

8

即B项正确。

答案:B

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.

Scientists in Denmark have been studying over 1,000 joggers and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a moderate pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries(动脉). Over time, this can cause serious injuries.

Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease risk of death and improve life expectancy, jogging a few times a week at a moderate pace is a good strategy. Anything more is not just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”

The implications of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as t'ai chi, yoga and brisk walking may be better for us than “iron man” events, triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, “You don't actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn't actually do too much.”

32.The underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “________”.

A.hard B.regular

C.practical D.flexible

33.The author presents some figures in Paragraph 2 to ________. A.suggest giving up jogging B.show risks of doing sports C.provide supportive evidence D.introduce the research process

34.According to the scientists, why is too much exercise harmful? A.It may injure the heart and arteries. B.It can make the body tired out. C.It will bring much pressure. D.It consumes too much energy. 35.What can be inferred from the text?

A.No exercise at all is the best choice. B.More exercise means a healthier life.

C.Marathons runners are least likely to die. D.Proper exercise contributes to good health. 答案与解析:

最新的一项科学研究显示:从事剧烈运动的人与根本不锻炼的人死亡几率是一样的,而适度的锻炼会有益于健康。

9

相近,表示“艰苦的,费力的”。regular“定时的”;practical“实用的”;flexible“灵活的”。

答案:C

34.解析:细节理解题。根据第二段的最后两句“The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes structural changes to the heart and arteries(动脉).Over time, this can cause serious injuries”可知,剧烈运动会导致心脏和动脉结构发生变化,从而有损健康。

答案:A

35.解析:推理判断题。根据最后两段可知,过度锻炼不仅没有必要,而且还可能有害,适当的锻炼会有助于健康。

答案:D

Unfortunately, we've all been victims of betrayal. Whether we've been stolen from, lied to, misled, or cheated on, there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can't trust anymore. __37__ It's understandable, but if you're willing to build trust in a relationship again, we have some steps you can take to get you there.

●__38__ Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being.

●__39__ If you've been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there's a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”. At some point in all of our lives, we'll have our trust tested or violated.

●You didn't lose “everything”. Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. __40__ Instead, it's a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness.

A.Learn to really trust yourself.

B.It is putting confidence in someone. C.Stop regarding yourself as the victim.

D.Remember that you can expect the best in return.

E.They've been too badly hurt and they can't bear to let it happen again. F.This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships.
