from depression (抑郁症). “It’s important to recognize that when men become depressed it may not be quite the picture of depression most of us have,” said Dr. Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health.
Even though depression in men is only about half as common as it is in women, 6 million men in America are diagnosed (诊断) with depression annually, mental experts say. Men are more likely to suffer in silence and not seek treatment while depressed women are more likely to report feelings of sadness, helplessness, and guilt.
Researchers say it is often more difficult for men to identify their illness. Men with depression are more likely to report exhaustion, irritability (易怒), and loss of interest in work.
According to data released in the Journal of the American Medical Association, about 16 percent of the U.S. adult population will have a major depression at some time in their lives. And about as many as 14 million Americans suffered a period of depression in the last year alone, with the average episode lasting about four months. Men and women arrive at depression the same way: It’s a chemical imbalance in the brain. Studies suggest you are at greater risk of developing depression if you’ve suffered a severe loss as a child, an overwhelmingly stressful event as an adult, or you have a family history of depression. But however one develops depression, men appear to react to it differently than women.

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:
On December 25, 2000, many people across North America received a rare Christmas treat when the moon passed in front of the sun resulting in a partial solar eclipse.
Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the earth and the sun, and the moon’s shadow covers part of the earth, and a total solar eclipse takes place when the moon’s shadow blocks out the sun entirely. What made this particular solar eclipse unique was that this event has occurred on December 25 only 30 times during the past 5,000 years, the last time in 1954.
But people must be very careful when attempting to view a solar eclipse. Without taking some measures, one can damage one’s eyes; however, there are several safe methods.
First, you can view a solar eclipse by using eclipse safety glasses for filtering out (过滤) the sun’s harmful rays. Eclipse safety glasses should be used when any part of the sun is visible. While sunglasses can block out some of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, the results can be very deceptive. The eye’s natural reaction to this darkened state when wearing sunglasses is to make the pupil larger, which allows in more light and can intensify the damage to your eyes.
You can also watch an eclipse by projecting the sun’s image on a piece of paper either by using a telescope, or by creating a hole in a piece of paper and viewing the result on another piece of paper.
Only during a total eclipse can you watch the eclipse without eye protection. Even then, extreme caution should be taken.
It is estimated that the future generations can record the next eclipse on Christmas in the year 2307, but only on the condition that they’re visiting the west coast of Africa for the holidays.
36. What type of eclipse occurred on December 25, 2000? A) Total lunar eclipse. B) Partial solar eclipse. C) Total solar eclipse. D) Partial lunar eclipse. 37. What made this eclipse so unique? A) The location for viewing it. B) Its timing on the calendar. C) Its movement across the sky.
D) The long interval from the previous one.
38. Why does the author say “the results can be deceptive” (Para. 4)?
A) Because using sunglasses to watch the eclipse may damage the eyes more. B) Because sunglasses are more effective than people believe. C) Because sunglasses can block none of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. D) Because the results are too good to believe.
