Darwin knew that the long tube on the Christmas Star orchid was important because it held the nectar that a pollinator would come to drink. But what animal had a tongue almost a foot long?
The Christmas Star orchid gave off a sweet smell but only at night. Its white petals were easy to see in the dark. Both of these clues pointed to a nighttime pollinator.
Darwin also knew that the orchids grow far apart. A pollinator would have to be a strong, fast flier to make its way from one flower to another. These clues pointed to a moth. Most moths are active at night, and most are strong fliers. And they drink nectar through a tongue-like feeding organ.
Darwin predicted that someday a moth with a long tongue would be found in Madagascar.
A few scientists made fun of his prediction. No one had ever seen a moth with an 11-inch-long tongue.

A survey about what activities high-school students participate in after class was conducted recently. Here are the results: 15.5% of them take part in sports activities while 46.3% join in the out-of-class learning activities, with 38.2% going to community activities.
