Our character, basically, is a composite of our habits. “Sow a thought, reap(收获) an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny(命运),” the proverb says.

Habits are powerful factors in our lives. Because they are consistent, often unconscious patterns, they constantly, daily, express our character and produce our effectiveness or ineffectiveness.

As Horace Mann, the great educator, once said, “Habits are like a cable. We weave a wire of it every day and soon it cannot be broken.” I personally do not agree with the last part of his expression. I know habits can be learned and unlearned. But I also know it isn’t a quick fix. It contains a process and a matchless will.

Those of us who watched the lunar voyage of Apollo 11 were transfixed(呆住) as we saw the first men walk on the moon and return to earth. But to get there, those astronauts actually had to break out of the huge gravity pull of the earth. More energy was spent in the first few minutes of lift-off, in the first few miles of travel, than was used over the next several days to travel half a million miles.

Habits, too, have huge gravity pull-more than most people realize or would admit. Breaking deeply imbedded (嵌入) habitual tendencies such as delay, impatience, criticalness, or selfishness that violate basic principles of human effectiveness includes more than a little willpower and a few minor changes in our lives. “Lift off” takes a very hard effort, but once we break out of the gravity pull, our freedom takes on a whole new dimension.

Like any natural force, gravity pull can work with us or against us. The gravity pull of some of our habits may generally be keeping us from going where we want to go. But it is also gravity pull that keeps our world together, that keeps the planets in their orbits and our universe in order. It is a powerful force, and if we use it effectively, we can use the gravity pull of habit to create the cohesiveness(凝聚力) and order necessary to establish effectiveness in our lives.

66. Which of the following is TRUE according to the proverb? A. Action is the proper fruit of knowledge. B. A large part of virtue consists in good habits. C. Behavior depends on attitude. D. A good beginning makes a good ending.

67. The author doesn’t agree all Horace Mann said because ________. A. he was not quite sure about what the educator expressed B. he misunderstood the educator’s statements

C. he thought the educator concluded the result absolutely D. he had an opposite understanding about habits

68. What is the purpose of the author to give the example of lunar voyage of Apollo 11? A. To show people that everything is possible if taking efforts. B. To tell the heart-shaking experience of the voyage. C. To advise people to break out of the gravity pull in life. D. To state that good habits’ forming needs hard work.

7

69. Lifting off the gravity pull of bad habits may _______.

A. cause some ill effects on your life B. cost you a lot of energy and efforts C. need everyone’s working together D. require others watching over 70. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph? A. The gravity pull of habit has two sides.

B. The gravity pull keeps everything in the world in order. C. The gravity pull of habit affects our lives effectively. D. The gravity pull of habit keeps us from what we will do.

D

Almost a decade ago, the federal government dropped $10 million for an Earth-monitoring satellite that never made it into space. Today it sits in a closet in Maryland. Cost to taxpayers for storing it: $1 million a year. And that's just what's hiding in one closet. Who knows what's in the rest of them?

Because we think the government should be held to at least the same standards as a publicly traded company, and because as taxpayers, we're America's shareholders, we performed an audit (财务检查)of sorts of the federal books. We're not economists, but we do have common sense. We tried to get help from Congressional staffers from both parties, as well as various watchdog groups and agencies. In the end, we found that the federal government wastes nearly $1 trillion every year.

That's roughly equal to the amount collected annually by the Internal Revenue Service in personal income taxes. Put another way, it's also equal to about one-third of the country's $2.9 trillion total annual budget. And reclaiming that lost trillion could help wipe out the country's annual budget deficit(赤字), improve education, and provide health insurance for those who don't have it.

So how do you define \(GAO), a federal watchdog agency, calls it \most for their money.\piece of meat sitting in your refrigerator: If it smells rotten, it's waste. Our government regularly pays for products and services it never gets, wildly overpays companies to do things it could do more cheaply itself, loses money outright due to lax(不严格的)accounting and oversight, and spends money randomly on unnecessary programs.

How exactly does the federal government waste your hard-earned tax dollars? We've identified what we consider ten of the worst ways.

71.The underlined sentence in Paragraph1 really means .

A.there are many other closets

B.there are some other satellites

C.there is something else in the closets D.the waste may be quite amazing 72.Which of the following can best describe the feeling of the author?

A.Annoyed.

B.Calm.

C.Surprised.

D.Not concerned.

73.Which of the following statements may be right?

A.The country’s annual budget is usually decided by the public. B.The government failed in launching the satellite.

C.The government is only wasting money in space experiments.

8

D.The amount collected annually in personal income taxes is equal to the country’s budget. 74.The best title for the passage would be .

A.Protecting Our Rights! B.Our Country Is In Danger!

C.The Government Is Wasting Our Tax Dollars! D.How to Prevent Government from Wasting Money! A.The government’s taking some steps to stop wasting taxes.

76. Exercise, the Road to Health./ The Importance of Exercise. 77. Of all ages.

78. remains the most popular form of exercise /is still popular. 79. To show us how to exercise to improve our health. 80. The heart rate. 范文

Cheating in exams seems to be inevitable even though we all know it is dishonest. When having difficulty passing exams, those who don’t study hard or grasp what they have learnt tend to cheat in order to get high grades.

One of my classmates is just such a guy. When faced with exams, he tried to use different ways to cheat like passing small piece of paper with answers, referring to his books or copying other’s answers. As a result, he did get a better grade which was beyond his own ability. Gradually, he became increasingly dependent on other’s answers rather than think for himself. What’s more, he became less and less confident of dealing with difficult problems.

It’s obvious that cheating does harm to us. We should be honest and try to get good results by studying hard.
