Less than 60 percent of students now entering four – year American colleges are likely to graduate. The completion rate is lower than for almost any other wealthy country, and worst for poor and minority students.
On Tuesday President Osama gave a nationally broadcast speech to students about the importance of staying in school. He spoke on the first day of classes at a high school in Virginia. He talked about personal responsibility, and used himself as an example of someone who overcame difficulties.
“My father left my family when I was two years old, and I was raised by a single mother who had to work and struggled at times to pay the bills and wasn’t always able to give us things other kids had. There were times when I missed having a father in my life. Their were times when I was lonely and felt like I didn’t fit in.” said President Obama.
But he told students that problems in their own lives should not stop them from learning “There’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class or dropping out of school. There’s no excuse for not trying.”
This was not the first presidential speech to students. Ronald Reagan spoke from the White House in 1998. and George H.W. Bush spoke from a school in Washington in 1991.
But many conservative criticized plans for the speech. Some called it “socialized education” or federal interference in local schools. Others feared it would be too political. Some schools decided not to show the speech. But the White House released the text on Monday, and that calmed a lot of critics.
On Sunday, on the CBS program “Face the Nation,” Education Secretary Arne Duncan said 30 percent of students do not graduate from his school. He called the dropout rate “staggering.” It represents more than a million students every year who entered ninth grade but did not complete 12 th grade.

The automobile industry will still rank as the most profitable and powerful industry of the twenty – first century. There were presently one billion cars on earth in 2010, or about one car for every seven people sales of the automobile industry stand at about a trillion dollars, making it the world’s biggest manufacturing industry.
The car, and the roads it travels on, will be revolutionized in the twenty-first century. The key to tomorrow's \传感器). \vehicles and roads that see and hear and feel and smell and talk and act,\predicts Bill Spreitzer, technical director of General Motors Corporation's ITS program, which is designing the smart car and road of the future.
Approximately 40,000 people are killed each year in the United States in traffic accidents. The number of people that are killed or badly injured in car accidents is so vast that we don't even bother to mention them in the newspapers anymore. Fully half of these fatalities come from drunk drivers, and many others from carelessness.
A smart car could eliminate most of these car accidents. It can sense if a driver is drunk via electronic sensors that can pick up alcohol vapor in the air, and refuse to start up the engine. The car could also alert the police and provide its precise location if it is stolen. Smart cars have already been built which can monitor one's driving and the driving conditions nearby. Small radars hidden in the bumpers can scan for nearby cars. Should you make a serious driving mistake (e.g., change lanes when there is a car in your \spot\the computer would sound an immediate warning.

Tiny cannons and guns, metal figures and miniature household objects – lately, the Thames River in London, England, has been looking a lot like a toy store. That’s because people with metal detectors have been exploring the riverbank. They’ve found toys that date back to as early as the 1200s. And these toys are changing the way historians view medieval (中世纪的) kids’ lives.
Before the discoveries, many historians thought that “there wasn’t really such a thing as childhood in the Middle Ages”, said Hazel Forysth of the Museum of London. The Middle Ages, or medieval times, lasted in Europe from about the year 500 AD to 1500 AD. Historians thought that parents didn't pay much attention to their kids, because families were often very large. Plus, many kids died when they were young.
At the time, everyone—kids and adults—had fairly poor healthcare and diet. Children who did survive were often sent to work at the age of six.
But finding the medieval toys has caused some historians to changed their minds. “Some medieval parents were very devoted to their children and gave them every luxury and pleasure they could afford,” Forsyth said.
Toys like the ones found in the Thames River are very rare. Most of these toys are made of pewter, a metal that decays very easily. But the stinky mud on the Thames riverbank has very little oxygen. This lack of oxygen prevents decay and helped preserve the toys.
Want to see what toys kids played with hundreds of years ago? The medieval toys are touring Britain as part of an exhibition called \
