An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer about his plans to leave the
house-building business to live a more leisurely life with his wife and enjoy his extended family. He would miss the paycheck each week, but he wanted to retire. They could get by.
The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one
more house as a personal favour. The carpenter said yes, but over time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He resorted to poor workmanship and used inferior materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.
When the carpenter finished his work, his employer came to inspect the house. Then he
handed the front-door key to the carpenter and said, \
The carpenter was shocked!
What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done
it all so differently.
So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into
the building. Then, with a shock, we realize we have to live in the house we have built. If we could do it over, we would do it much differently.
But, you cannot go back. You are the carpenter, and every day you hammer a nail, place a board, or build a wall. Someone once said, \and the choices you make today, help build the \build wisely!

When I was a child, I thought ?work? was somewhere adults went, similar to what
4
?school? was for children. That meant, it was a place you went for a certain amount of time each day, until you were allowed to leave. A ?boss? was analogous to a ?teacher?, in that you had to listen to them and complete the tasks they gave you. Basically, work was something you had to wait out until you were allowed to go home and have a snack.
The concepts of independent work, deadlines, goals, projects and finished products were
unknown to my young mind. ?Work? was a place you went because you had to, not because you wanted to. There were more fun things to do than going to ?work.?
As I grew up I learned that this is not what ?work? is like. Work can be different things to
different people and it is different depending on what your job actually is. I?ve had various jobs in my life, ranging in levels of responsibility, stress, pay and emotional satisfaction.
My current full time job, I can sadly say, is mostly like what I had imagined ?work? to be
as a child. I sit in a room, at a desk. I wait for my boss to have something for me to do, which he rarely does. But from time to time he comes in with some documents he wants me to type or some letters that need to be sent out and then I spring into action. But, for the most part, I sit and I wait until I can go home.
55. How would the writer describe the job he currently has?
A. Stressful. B. Normal. C. Interesting. D. Boring. 56. Where does the writer most probably work now?
A. In an office. B. In a library. C. In a school. D. In a park. 57. The underlined word ?analogous? in paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to ?___________?.
A. more important than B. similar to C. better than D. as good as

Mainland China?s trade surplus - or the difference between the total value of goods exported from China and goods imported into China - increased for the second straight month. This suggests the recent recall of Chinese toys from the United States for safety reasons has not affected the long term demand for Chinese products.
Exports last month climbed to US$114.48 billion, an increase that was larger than 16.1 percent rise in imports, which climbed to US$88.56 billion, the custom bureau said yesterday. That brought the total trade surplus for the first nine months of this year to US$185.65, surpassing the US$177.5 billion for all of last year.
The recovery in China?s trading performance over the past three months has surprised some economists. “Earlier this year the picture didn?t look so good”, said Bank of China official Li Hua. “The return of many Chinese products from America due to safety issues had a negative impact on export levels. At the same time orders for new aeroplanes by Chinese airline companies boosted the import causing the lowest level of surplus in more than 3 years.”
But the decrease in exports to the USA that followed the return of Chinese products was less than the increase in the demand for Chinese products from the European Union. European countries have bought 33.5% more Chinese goods in each of the past three months. Exports to Asia and Africa also increased, although by lesser amounts, over that same period. Chinese exports to the USA have also started to recover.
“The American toy company involved, Mattel, has admitted that most of the goods that they returned were due to design problem by the company, not because of poor manufacturing
