W: Here, I’ll hold the door for you. M: Thanks. W: What are all these papers you’ve got? M: I’ve been working on the company’s annual report. I’m having to take it home with me. W: You look really tired. M: Yeah, well, I’ve been staying up until midnight. W: Are you almost done? M: No, I’ve still got a lot to do. And I have to do Bob’s work as well because he’s in hospital. W: Oh, that doesn’t seem fair! Can’t some of the other managers help you? M: I’ve asked them, but they all say they’re too busy. I guess it’s going to be like this until Bob gets back. W: Yeah. Well, let me know if I can help you with anything. M: Thanks. I will. Text 8 W: 911. M: Help. I need some help. W: Yes, sir. Can you tell me what is happening? M: I am at Coldwater University and a student of mine has just fainted. W: Yes, sir. Can you tell me exactly where you are? M: We’re on the third floor of Technology Hall, room 302. W: I understand, sir. May I have your name and the student’s name? M: Her name is Kathy Rivera. And my name’s Lawrence White. I’m a professor here at the university. M: Um, Andy and two other students. They’re watching her while I call. Shall we drive her to the hospital? W: No. Just stay there. An ambulance is already on its way and it should be there very soon. M: OK. Thanks. Text 9

W: Hey, Bob, guess what? I’m going to visit Quebec next summer. I’m invited to go to a friend’s wedding, but while I’m there, I’d also like to do some sightseeing. M: That’s nice, Sherry. But do you mean the province of Quebec or Quebec City? W: I mean the province. My friend’s wedding is in Montreal, so I’m going there first. I’ll stay for 5 days. Is Montreal the capital city of the province? M: Well, many people think so because it’s the biggest city, but it’s not the capital. Quebec City is, but Montreal is great. The Santa Lawrence River runs right through the middle of the city. It’s beautiful in summer. W: Wow, and do you think I can get by in English? My French is okay, but not that good. I know most people there speak French, but can I also use English? M: Well, people speak both French and English there, but you’ll hear French most of the time and all the street signs are in French. In fact, Montreal is the third largest French-speaking city in the world. So you’d better practice your French before you go. W: Good advice, what about Quebec City? I’ll visit a friend from college who lives there now. What’s it like? M: It’s a beautiful city, very old. Many old buildings have been nicely restored. Some of them were built in the 17th and 18th centuries. You’ll love it there. W: Fantastic, I can’t wait to go. Text 10

W: Good evening and welcome to this week’s Business World, a program for and about business people. Tonight we have Mr. Angeleno who came to the US six years ago, and is now an established businessman with three restaurants in town. Tell us Mr. Angeleno, how did you get started? M: Well I started off with a small diner. I did all the cooking myself and my wife waited on 第 22 页 共 23 页 金太阳新课标资源网wx.jtyjy.com

tables. It was really too much work for two people. My cooking is great. And word got around town about the food. Within a year, I had to hire another cook and four waitresses. When that restaurant became very busy, I decided to expand my business. Now with fifteen places, my main concern is keeping the business successful and running smoothly. W: Do you advertise? M: Oh yes. I don’t have any TV commercials, because they are too expensive. But I advertise a lot on radio and in local newspapers. My children used to distribute ads. in nearby shopping centers, but we don’t need to do that anymore. W: Why do you believe you’ve been so successful? M: Em, I always serve the freshest possible food and I make the atmosphere as comfortable and as pleasant as I can, so that my customers will want to come back. W: So you always aim to please the customers? M: Absolutely! Without them I would have no business at all. W: Thank you Mr.Angeleno. I think your advice will be helpful to those just starting out in business.
