Modera Hotel

It is just steps from Portland State University and the heart of downtown. Modern furnishings and a 500-piece art collection are the icing on the cake of this four-star hotel, which also has a garden-setting outdoor courtyard and restaurant.

Beneath the tranquil settings of Yellowstone National Park in the US lies an enormous magma chamber (熔岩腔膛) . It?s responsible for the geysers (间歇泉) and hot springs that define the area, but for scientists at Nasa, it?s also one of the greatest natural threats to human civilization as we know: a potential supervolcano.

When Nasa scientists came to consider the problem, they conceived a plan to drill up to 10km down into the supervolcano, and pump down water at high pressure. The circulating water would return at a temperature of around 350C (662F), thus slowly day by day extracting (提取) heat from the volcano. But drilling into a supervolcano does not come without certain risks, namely triggering the eruption you?re intending to prevent. Therefore, the idea is to drill in from the supervolcano from the lower sides, starting outside the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park, and extracting the heat from the underside of the magma chamber. “This way you?re preventing the heat coming up from below from ever reaching the top of the chamber which is where the real threat arises,” Wilcox says.

Such a plan could be potentially applied to every active supervolcano on the planet, and Nasa?s scientists are hoping that their blueprints will encourage more practical scientific discussion and debate for tackling the threat.

“When people first considered the idea of defending the Earth from an asteroid (小行星)impact, they reacted in a similar way to the supervolcano threat,” Wilcox says. “People thought, ?As puny (微不足道的) as we are, how can humans possibly prevent an asteroid from hitting the Earth.? Well, it turns out if you engineer something which pushes very slightly for a very long time, you can make the asteroid miss the Earth. So the problem turns out to be easier than people think. In both cases it requires the scientific community to invest brain power and you have to start early. But Yellowstone explodes roughly every 600,000 years, and it is about 600,000 years since it last exploded, which should cause us to sit up and take notice.”

Not all people in Italy can tolerate football. There are Canadians who won?t love hockey. A similar situation exists in America, where there are those individuals you may be one of them who yawn or even frown when somebody mentions baseball. Baseball to them means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits standing around in a field staring away while very little of anything happens. They tell you it?s a game better suited to the 19th century, slow, quiet and gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there?s the sport that glorifies “the hit”.

By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent and still.

On TV, the game is fractured into a dozen perspectives, replays, close ups. The geometry of the game, however, is essential to understanding it. You will think much about the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game. It is in this projection that the game affords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won?t do it for you.

Take, for example, the third baseman. You sit behind the third base dugout and you watch him watching home plate. His legs are apart, knees flexed. His arms hang loose. He does a lot of this. The skeptic(怀疑者)still cannot think of any other sports so still, so passive. But watch what happens every time the pitcher throws: the third baseman goes up on his toes, flexes his arms or bring the glove to a point in front of him, takes a step right or left, backward or forward, perhaps he glances across the field to check his first baseman?s position. Suppose the pitch is a ball. “Nothing happened,” you say. “I could have had my eyes closed.”

The skeptic and the innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music is. Watch the third baseman. Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocket in your glove; watch

3

the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of horsehide on wood. If football is a symphony of movement and theater, baseball is chamber music, a spacious interlocking of notes, chores and responses.

28. The passage is mainly concerned with ______________. A. the attraction of football B. the attraction of baseball

C. the different tastes of people for sports D. the different characteristics of sports

29. Those who don?t like baseball may complain that___________. A. it is not exciting enough

B. it involves fewer players than football C. it is only to the taste of the old D. it is overconfident and looks funny 30. The author admits that _____________. A. baseball is too peaceful for the young B. baseball is more interesting than football

C. baseball may seem boring when watched on TV D. baseball is less attractive than football

31. We can safely conclude that the author .

A. likes football B. hates football C. likes baseball D. hates baseball

Li Ming , a 13-year-old student has spent most of his spare time on a mobile game, King of Glory since May. “Every boy in our class is playing it, and we hold competitions within and among classes. Good players are respected and it is easier for them to make more friends,” said Li. He added one of the most important reasons they love the game is that the historical characters are all in cartoon style and look “very cool.”

Li is one of many thousands of young players who are crazy about this game. Although this Chinese mobile game enjoy great popularity, recently, it has come under fire for promoting an inaccurate representation of ancient Chinese history. The characters in the game not only travel through time and space to fight together, but also take on historical figures? names with no connection at all to their experiences in history. This characteristic could easily confuse young players. Some parents are worried that it may mislead their children and have a bad influence on their study, especially on history and Chinese.

Zhang Liang, a 27-year-old IT worker, thinks such worries are reasonable, but the problem is not alarming. Zhang pointed out that a proper use of history or legendary materials in games should combine education with entertainment.

However, some hit back at the accusation, arguing that games are supposed to be creative, and that “King of Glory” doesn?t intend to be set in any specific historical period.

“I am aware that there are many young players, some even in primary school. Some might be affected by the game in certain ways, but it can do a lot of good if

4

students become interested in the characters and do more research to that end,” one “King of Glory” player said.

After all, the root cause of the problem is that there is no game rating system in China to protect children who are too young to distinguish virtual world from real history.

32. Why did the author mention Li Ming?s story in Paragraph 1? A. To show King of Glory is very popular. B. To lead in the topic of the passage.

C. To explain why young people play the game. D. To persuade us to play the game .

33. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “come under fire” in paragraph 2? A. Be popular. B. Be accused. C. Be played. D. Be banned. 34. Some parents worry that young players of“King of Glory”may ______ A. get addicted to it. B. lose interest in study.

C. have trouble in understanding real history. D. feel confused about the characters in the game.

35. What?s Zhang?s attitude towards the game“King of Glory”?

A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Indifferent. D. Objective. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
