Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you, “What is the most useful thing in your life?” Maybe you will answer, “Computers and the Internet.” The first computer was made in 1946. It was big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller, but they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer said, “People can?t live without computers today.”

The Internet came about twenty-five years later than computers. But it can be found almost everywhere now. We can use it to read books, send e-mails, do some shopping, play games or make friends.

Young men, especially the middle school students like the Internet very much. They often go to the Internet bars when they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have seen these friends. They don?t know their real names, ages and even sex. They are so interested in making “unreal friends” that they can?t put their heart into study. Some of them play the games in the Internet bars all day and all night. Many of them can?t catch up with others in many subjects because of that.

Now the government has done many things. Some bad bars have been banned. But that?s not enough. The teachers and parents are still worrying about their students or children.

We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But at the same time, we should remember that computers and the Internet could not do all the things.

Have you ever suddenly felt that someone you know was in trouble-and he was? Have you ever dreamed something that came true later? Maybe you have ESP (超感官知觉).

ESP may be called a sixth sense. It seems to let people know about events before they happen, or events that are happening some distance away.

Here?s an example: A woman was washing clothes. Suddenly she screamed, “My father is dead! I saw him sitting in the chair!” just then a telegram came. The woman?s father had died of a heart attack. He had died sitting in a chair.

There are thousands of stories like this one on record. Scientists are studying them to find out what?s behind these strange mental messages. Here?s another example—one of hundreds of dreams that have come true:

A man dreamed he was walking along a road when a horse carriage(马车) came by. The driver said, “There?s room for one more.” The man felt the driver was Death, so he ran away. The next day, the man was getting on a crowded bus. The bus driver said, “There?s room for one more.” Then the man saw that the driver?s face was the same face he had seen in the dream.
