General introduction 4mins Introduction of whole unit. 1. Introduction of diction and its main principles. 2. Introduction of the contents of this unit. 8 mins II. Levels of words Introduce the definition of different levels of words. formal Standard English: Stylistic common informal Nonstandard English:Slang words, dialectal words, certain words that are often used by uneducated speakers. Do the task of dialectal words together. III.Meanings of words Words have both denotative meaning and connotative meaning and their meanings are different in those five ways:Stylistic level,degree of emphasis, emotional coloring,tone and collocation: 1.Stylistically, words of Anglo-Saxon origin are more informal than those of Latin or French origin. 2.Some synonymous words are different in the degree of emphasis. 3.Some synonymous words are different in emotional coloring. 4.Some synonymous words (同义词) are different in tone. 5.Some synonymous words are different in collocation. Give students some tips when chosen words: 1.Very often an English word has no exact Chinese equivalent (同义字 ) and it has to be translated in different ways in different contexts. 2.To understand the meaning of an English word one had better find out how it is defined in English in a dictionary with English explanations. Chinese translations are not always reliable, and sometimes they are misleading. Do the first 5 questions of task 3 together. Ⅳ. General and specific words Explain the definition of general words and specific words. Let students read the examples on page 13 and explain “laugh” and some specific words that have the same meaning of laugh. Explain the good use of specific words in writing a paragraph. Read the first example on page 14 and and explain it to the students. Let students compose their own specific paragraph based on the second example on the book. Share their work with the class. Do task 4 together. V. Idioms Explain the definition of idiom. Show students 7 most commonly types of idioms. Explain the meaning of some phrases and ask them to remember.
