I was in the Sants Cruz Mountains not long ago, speaking and singing at a women’s conference. We were focusing on the theme of loving others in practical ways through our gifts, and something in particular happened during one of the sessions(会议)will remain imprinted in memory.
A young Syrian woman(Lilith) was invited to the conference at the last minute, and everyone seemed surprised and delighted that she’d actually come. Just a few days earlier, Lilith had fled her country and found refuge with one of the women attending the conference. As an Orthodox Christian in Syria, she and her loved ones had become attacked targets of violent terrorist groups in the country’s ongoing civil war.
Lilith had witnessed horrors no one of her young age should ever see. Despite the further danger it presented, she’d decided to leave her home and her family to find safety here in America. Knowing some of her story, and seeing her sitting through the sessions at the retreat(畏缩不前)------head, covered in a scarf, bowed toward the floor------broke my heart.

Lilith’s story touched all of us, including Pam, who was quilt maker. Pam had just finished a beautiful quilt, and had brought it with her. She, along with a few of the leaders, decided to give it to Lilith as a symbol of their comfort and love. During our last session, Lilith was called forward and prayed over, hugged, and wrapped up in that beautiful quilt. I thought of the many hours Pam undoubtedly spent working on it, and the terrible events that led Lilith to this moment-----surrounded by the beauty and love quilt embodied. I wept. When they told her it was for her, she wept.
5. What is the purpose of the women’s conference?
A. To help others in a practical way. B. To win equal rights for women. C. To get together to dance and sing. D. To exchange gifts with each other. 6. Why did Lilith go to America?
A. To attend the women’s conference. B. To find safety. C. To find her family. D. To find a better job. 7. From this passage, we know that the writer is____________.
A. enthusiastic B. sympathetic C. intelligent D. talented 8. What is the meaning of the underlined word ?
A. a place of interest B. a place of danger C. a place of conference D. a place of shelter

In Korea, a shaman dance is called a Mu-dong. Shamanism was popular throughout Korea’s long history. Even one to two hundred years ago, when people were sick, they called a shaman instead of a doctor. Nowadays, the number of shamans is reduced, but they still exist.
Traditionally, people called a shaman when they faced bad things or misfortune because a shaman was believed to be powerful enough to prevent a misfortune. The shaman then came to their home and performed a religious ceremony. The ceremony was performed by dancing and shouting. The movement of the shaman dance is simple. There is just jumping and turning. If a shaman feels some ecstasy(狂喜), she starts a special dance

called Dance on the Blade(刀刃).She dances on the blade of a sword, barefoot with no socks or shoes. Unbelievably, a shaman doesn’t bleed at all.
Nowadays, people don’t call a shaman any more. But I think the shaman dance should be preserved because it is one of the cultural traditions of our long history. Japanese Cherry Blossom dances are beautiful, traditional dances. Most are slow and don’t look difficult, so we have to dance as interestingly and beautifully as we can in order not to bore the audience. When I am dancing, I become a princess, a blossom, a young girl, an old lady, a fox, or a man. It is very real to me. I love Japanese dances because I can become anything I want, even the most beautiful girl in the world!
I want to be a great dancer like Nanase Aikawa. Her dancing is not only beautiful and interesting, but it is her whole life. She is very much looking forward to me being a good dancer. She thinks of me being her daughter, and I think of her as my second mother.
9. We know from the part of Korean Shaman (Mu-dong) Dance that___________.
A. people never called a doctor when they got ill B. a shaman was powerful enough to prevent a misfortune.

Standing on one leg is a simple way to assess someone’s risk of suffering a stroke(中风), suggests a new study.
Researchers have found struggling to balance on one leg for 20 seconds or longer is linked to an increased risk of small blood vessel(血管) damage in the brain and reduced thinking ability in otherwise healthy people with no symptoms.
“ Our study found the ability to balance on one leg is an important test for brain health. Individuals showing poor balance on one leg should receive increased attention, as this may indicate an increased risk of brain diseases and cognitive(认知的)decline,” said Dr Tabara, associate professor at Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan.
The study, published in the journal Stroke, consisted of 841 women and 546 men, with an average age of 67. To measure one-leg standing time, they stood with their eyes open and raised one leg. The maximum time for keeping the leg raised was 60 seconds. The participants performed the examination twice and the better of the two times was used in the study analysis.
The researchers found that the inability to balance on one leg for longer than 20 seconds was associated with brain diseases without symptoms. Overall, those with brain diseases were older and had high blood pressure than those who did not have such disease.
Short one-legged standing time was also linked with lower cognitive score. Although previous studies have examined the connection between physical abilities and the risk of stroke, this is among the first studies to closely examine how long a person can stand on one leg as an indication of their overall brain health.
Dr Tabara and his team also found a strong link between struggling to stand on one leg and increased age.
13. Dr Tabra suggested that one who couldn’t stand on one leg for more than 20

B. It included more than 1,300 people. C. It examined people of different age groups.
D. It required the participants to close their eyes first. 15. Which of the following might be the best title for the text? A. Overall Brain Health Deserves Close Attention. B. 16 .To research whether such a “sixth sense” really exists, Robert Baker, psychologist at the University of Kentucky, performed two experiments.
17 .The subjects were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later, he asked the subjects whether they felt they were being observed from behind. 18 .Then, he made another experiment. 19 .The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at than if they had just guessed.
