Step 1 Revision As a means of unspoken communication, body language plays a very important role in our daily life. However, owing to cultural differences of body language, a major misunderstanding is very likely to arise between people from different cultures. The following is what I saw at the airport. Tony, from Columbia, approached Julia, touched her shoulder and kissed her on the check while Julia, from Britain, stepped back appearing surprised and put up her hands, as if in defence. Thus, not all cultures greet each other in the same way, nor are they comfortable in the same way with touching or distance between people. Facial expressions can also be misread. Take smile for example. In general, the function of smile is to show happiness and put people at ease. However, sometimes smiles can be false, hiding other feelings like anger. Besides, when someone loses face, he or she will smile to hide it. As a result, studying international customs can certainly help avoid difficulties in today’s world of cultural crossroads!
