Our multimillion nerve-cell central nervous system has its roots in the scattered nerve cells of tiny, lowly organisms that lived in water half a billion years ago. Nerve cells evidently first appeared in coelenterates (腔肠动物) \(海葵). A coelenterate's nerve network lacks any kind of centralized control. This probably began with flatworms-- the first creatures to possess a head. Specialized sense cells help flatworms respond more flexibly than sea anemones to outside stimuli. But like most animals without a backbone, flatworms act by instinct (本能) and reflex.
Intelligent behavior remained impossible until the appearance of relatively big, complex
types of brain -- the types we find among the backboned animals, or vertebrates. The tiniest fish has a larger brain than the largest insect. But the development of a fish's three-part brain reflects that beast's unintellectual priorities. Much of the forebrain deals only with smell. The midbrain handles vision, the hindbrain, balance.
With early mammals (哺乳动物) the brain grew larger and more complex. Since coordination shifted from the midbrain to the forebrain, a developing structure capped by a folded cerebrum (大脑) to handle memory and learning. Meanwhile the hindbrain gained a large cerebellum to coordinate complicated movements.
Advanced mammals such as monkeys, apes, and humans (the primates) have brains derived from ancestors that took to living in the trees, where vision mattered more than smell. Accordingly the once-big \much larger.
26. What topic is the passage mainly concerned with?
27. According to this passage, does the insect has its brain? 28. Why do some animals have intelligent behavior?
29. In the last paragraph, which word can be replaced by the phrase \30. How many parts can the brain be divided into?

Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre. Most parents, I suppose, have had the experience of reading a bedtime story to their children. And they must have 31 how difficult it is to write a 32 children's book. Either the author has aimed too 33 , so that the children can't follow what is in his (or more often, her) story, 34 the story seems to be talking to the readers.
The best children's books are 35 very difficult nor very simple, and satisfy both the 36 _ who hears the story and the adult who 37 it. Unfortunately, there are in fact 38__ books like this, 39 the problem of finding the right bedtime story is not 40 to solve. This may be why many of books regarded as 41 of children's literature were in fact written for 42 .“Alice's Adventure in Wonderland” is perhaps the most 43 of this. Children, left for themselves, often 44 the worst possible interest in literature. Just leave a child in bookshop 45 and he will 46 willingly choose the books written in an imaginative way, or have a look at most children's comics, full of the stories and jokes which are the 47 of teachers and right-thinking parents.
Perhaps we parents should stop trying to brainwash children into 48 our taste in literature. After all children and adults are so 49 that we parents should not expect that they will enjoy the 50 books. So I suppose we'll just have to compromise over that bedtime story.

A few years ago, it was fashionable to speak of a generation gap, a division between young people and their elders. Parents complained that children did not show them proper respect and obedience, while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong? Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared. Actually, the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many critics argue that it is built into the fabric of our society. The young and the old seem to live in two very different world separated by different skills and
abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedoms and opportunities of our society, and in the rapid pace at which society changes.
