Ellen Sims is an 18-year-old college student. She has an important history exam tomorrow morning. Ellen is going to study all night. She is not going to sleep at all. Many college students ,like Ellen, do this often. They think that they can study all night. And they think that in the morning, they will remember everything that they studied the night before, Ellen thinks that this is a good way to study, but many doctors disagree. They say that sleep is very important for memory and brain development.
Scientists at Harvard Medical School in the US studied sleep and memory. They studied 24 people. First, they asked the people to look at a picture and remember it. At night, they put the people in two groups of 12.Group One went to sleep. Group Two did not. A few days later, the scientists showed some pictures to both groups. They asked the people to find the picture they saw before. The people in Group One did well. But the people in Group Two did not do well. It wasn't easy for them to remember the picture. What happened? Scientists say that sleep helps our memory. After we learn something new, sleep helps us remember it. And when we don't sleep, we can forget new things.
Scientists say that many teenagers, like Ellen, sleep too little. They go to school and they work, too. They also spend time with their friends. They are always busy and they think that sleep doesn't matter. But scientists say the brains of teenagers are still developing, and sleep is a very important part of the development. When teens sleep less than six hours, they can't think clearly. That is not very helpful for a student who is taking an exam. 65. Is Ellen going to study all night before the history exam?

Most people know something about the green house effect. Factories sent gases such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, into the atmosphere, the air around the earth. In the past, this wasn’t a problem because trees absorbed, or drank in CO2. But now people are cutting down billlions of trees in many countries. At the same time, factories are sending more CO2 into the atmosphere. It’s difficult to believe, but factories put billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year! One ton is 2000 pounds, so this is a lot of pollution. There is too much CO2 and there aren’t enough trees, so the world is getting warmer. In other words, we have a greenhouse effect. This is terrible for the environment.
What can we do about this? First, we can stop using so much coal and oil. We can learn to use different kinds of energy: the sun, wind, sand heat from volcanoes and from inside the earth. Second, instead of cutting down trees, we should plant more trees. One tree can absorb(吸收) ten pounds of carbon dioxide every year.
The trees are good for the earth’s atmosphere and for Guatemala. In small towns and villages in Guatemala, most women are poor and have hard lives. Trees help them in three ways. First, the Connecticut factory pays them to plant the trees. Their pay is corn, not money. The corn is good for their childrn. Second, these women know a lot about their environment. They know where to plant, when to plant, and what kinds of trees to plant. For example, they plant many fruit trees. The fruit gives them vitamins to their families’ diets. Other trees are good for firewood. In a few years, the women won’t spend so much time walking for wood. Third, all these trees are good for the soil. Now rain can’t wash the soil down the mountains so easily.
This plan isn’t enough to stop the greenhouse effect. But it’s a beginning. The women of Guatemala are helping themselves and helping their environment. As one woman says, “We’re planting for our famillies, for our children.”

Music has always been an important part of Chinese people’s life. People enjoy listening to music at home
and in concerts halls. As time goes by, music changes.
Traditional(传统的) music is part of our culture, so it often stays with us for a long time. Many of the traditional Chinese songs have been around for many years. Young musicians(音乐家) learn songs from older musicians and the music changes only very little. Modern Chinese music, which is loved by many young people, however, is mainly pop music. That means the songs will be popular for a short time and then replaced(替代) by new songs. Today’s musicians write new songs every year and we hear new songs on the radio every day.
Before radio and TV were invented, music could only be heard live — that is you had to go places where musicians gave performances(演出). The best musicians were very busy, so it was difficult and often expensive to hear really good music. For most people, the best chance to hear good music was during a festival or at a wedding. Today, people hear music all the time. Radio and TV play songs every day and night and you can even hear music played on the street.
One thing that hasn’t changed very much is what the songs are about. Both modern and traditional Chinese songs are about love and life. Some songs tell stories about past and some are about the news or the future. All of the songs have something to do with what it means to be a human being.
Music, traditional or modern, Chinese or international, seems to be a world language that everybody can understand and enjoy. Music changes and styles come and go, but nothing changes our love for good music. 65. Is music important for Chinese people’s life?

In 1995, Osceola McCarty gave a present of $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi. She wanted to help poor students. It was a very generous(慷慨的,善良的) thing to do. But her friends and neighbors were surprised. McCarty was a good woman. She went to church. She was always friendly and helpful. But everyone in her town knew that McCarty was not rich. In fact, she was poor.
How did a poor 86-year-old woman have so much money? Osceola McCarty was born in 1908 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She had to leave school when she was eight years old to help her family. She took a job washing clothes. She earned(挣钱) only a few dollars a day. Osceola washed the clothes by hand. Then she hung(悬,挂) the clothes to dry. She did this for nearly 80 years. In the 1960s, she bought an automatic(自动的) washer and dryer. But she gave them away. She did not think they got the clothes clean enough! At that time, many people started to buy their own washers and dryers. McCarty did not have much work, so she started to iron(熨) clothes instead.
McCarty never married or had children. Her life was very simple. She went to work and to church. She read her Bible(圣经). She had a black-and-white television. But she did not watch it very much. It had only one channel.
McCarty saved money all her life and eventually had about $250,000. When she was 86, a lawyer(律师) helped her make a will(遗嘱). She left money to the church, her relatives, and the university. McCarty just wanted to help others. She did not think she was a special person. But then people found out about her present to the university. She received many honors(荣誉). Do you want to know more cultures about other countries? Here are some messages you may be interested in.
Taking off your shoes or not
It’s bad manners to take off your shoes at the door of a London dinner party. But in Asia if you don’t take off your shoes before entering a home, you are not polite enough.
What you should do instead: If you see a row of shoes at the door, take off your shoes. If not, keep the shoes on.
Talking over dinner
In some countries, like Japan, don’t start talking while everyone else is having dinner. You’ll meet with silence – not because your group is unfriendly, but because mealtime is for eating, not talking. Also don’t talk in places like churches in Europe.
What you should do instead: Keep quiet! Knowing your right from your left
Some cultures in Africa and the Middle East still like to eat in traditional ways – using their hands. When people eat in this way, food is often offered for several people to share at the same time. That is why it’s important to wash your hands before eating. While eating, you have to follow the rule: Eat using your right hand, and use your left hand to do other things. Another thing to remember: Eat the food that’s closest to you. Don’t put your hand into the center of the table.
What You Should Do Instead: Follow the others and use your right hand. Even children who are left-handed in this culture are taught to eat with their right hands. If you really can’t, explain yourself to others before you eat.
