The Spring Festival couplets(对联)are one of the most common and important customs to celebrate the
Chinese New Year. They are often used to decorate doors and walls to express hope and happiness for the coming new year.
English language couplets have become a new and popular way among Chinese young people to celebrate the
Spring Festival. On China’s biggest consumer online shopping platform Taobao, there are dozens of shops selling
several kinds of couplets in English. A typical one reads “eat well, sleep well, have fun day by day” and “study
good, work good, make money more and more”.
Yu Runrun, who owns a Beijing shop, expects to sell about 600 sets of English couplets during the holiday
season. “I began to sell English couplets four years ago. Most of our buyers are young people who want to look
cool and are willing to pay more for fashionable things,” Yu said, adding that some send the couplets to foreign
friends as gifts. A set of English couplets in his shop costs about $4, almost double the price of the Chinese couplets.
Mo Hao, who teaches English, bought two sets of such couplets from Taobao, one for himself and the other
for his friend, Benjamin Wolken, who is from the United States. “It is very special and actually quite good-looking,
which will certainly stand out,” Mo said.
Wolken said, “I would consider buying the couplets for myself, or even make my own set in English, so I can
talk more with the people around me to learn Chinese culture and language.” He added, “I like being a part of the
Chinese community, so I enjoy being a part of the traditions.”
The key to selling more English couplets is that they should be written with really simple words, so that
people can easily understand the meaning, said Yu, the shopkeeper.
“Grammar is not important and ‘Chinglish’ is also acceptable. If the sentence is grammatically incorrect,
people will like it even more, just like the well-known and popular Chinglish saying ‘Good good study, day day 6
up’,” he said.
After all, the Spring Festival should be a happy get-together, he added.

Asians are known over the world as being “good at math”. Many people in the West agree with the idea. But is there some truth to it?
Yes, as it turns out, I can say that in daily life, Chinese people do more math than Americans. In fact, one can
even say daily life in China is an ongoing math test. I can think of examples, starting with shopping.
Walk into any department store in Beijing, and there is a sale going on. You will see signs with a single number and the Chinese character “zhe(折)” next to the sale products. Experienced western shoppers may think
that “7 the” must mean 70 percent discount(折扣). But the Chinese system encourages shoppers to do math to
find their discount, “7 the” means you pay 70 percent, resulting in a 30 percent discount. Some adults in the West
couldn’t do this simple math in their heads, because they left all that behind in elementary school.
Shopping for food was one of the early challenges we met in Beijing. When I was trying to buy milk and
yogurt on the shelf at the local supermarket I saw all the past expired dates on the bottles. I was very angry and
just about to see a manager to bring it to his attention. Later, a friend explained that those were production dates,
not expiration dates, as I had thought. She also showed me where they printed the shelf life of each product. So, to
put it in an American way, production date + shelf life = expiration date. Again, they are encouraging shoppers to do math.
Newcomers to China will no doubt be confused(困惑)about this system, which none of my Chinese friends
seems to think twice about. But a7
s an American, it was all very difficult. I often felt that I had to do math when I
simply wanted to buy something. But now that I’ve been
here a while, I see the wisdom in such a system.
Could it be how Chinese people stay smar t and clear into old age? After all, using your brain with word games and riddles(谜语)are believed to be helpful with some age-related illnesses. It appears that in China,
they’ve included in ordinary daily life a wise system where nobody forgets their early math lessons. Oh, would you like something to drink, coffee or cola?

Right now, millions of people are digging into their food with two sticks which have passed the test of time,
even when thousands of other tools and products haven’t. But 75 is so special about chopsticks? What can we learn from them? They teach us the importance of:
Slowing down. A common health suggestion is to try to eat 76 chopsticks when you can. Why? Because it slows you down and allows your stomach to tell your brain you’re full before you overeat. Eating with
chopsticks is a slower process, 77 that is not a bad thing. Sometimes we need to slow down and take things
one step at a time so that we have time to think, to realize that we’re actually full and that we don’t 78 to be in a rush.
Practice. Using chopsticks doesn’t come naturally. You have to learn to use them and practice it. In real life,
you can read about all the things you want to do, but it won’t work unless you actually try doing it. So stop
79 others eating join them and give the chopsticks a go.
Being simple. Chopsticks are a living example of being simple. They can come in all kinds of colors and
sizes but in fact they are just two long sticks. It is good to still have something which has only 80
use—simply to eat. It’s good to live a simple life and there is no need to keep developing, improving and fixing things all the time.
Aim(目标明确). If you’ve ever tried using them, you know that you can’t get what you want by just
haphazardly stabbing(乱戳)at the plate. To be 81 to get what you want, you have to aim for it. There’s no
way you can pick up everything in one go. Know what you want, and just do it. Sometimes, a 10
little bit of focus
makes the 82 between failure and success.
Sometimes it’s nice to enjoy each moment of life as it comes.
