Violence（暴力事件）took place in Urumqi, the capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Sunday. ---July 15, 2009. The Chinese government says that at least 184 people were killed in all, three quarters of them Han.
“They wanted to kill us, but there was nowhere for us to go.” Abulimit, who goes by his given name, said Wednesday, a day after the attack, his head bandaged and dried blood still splattered across his white shirt. “We were helpless.” They don’t listen to us.” He said. As he walked from a police station where he had been turned away while trying to report the thing.
He found himself among people whose language he doesn’t speak, but who hold all the power across Xinjiang---political, economic and culture. Although Uighurs are still the largest ethnic group among the 20 million people of Xinjiang, many just poor farmers, have been flocking to the region for decades, in part because of government encouragement. Urumqi is now more than 70 percent Han.
The Urumqi police have detained several hundred suspects, including a dozen leaders. They are tracking downing the riot leaders still at large. When it comes to family planning policy and university admissions, among other things, (84)Uighurs are treated with respect and are even given advantages over the Han.
