I'll list some of the books and plays I read when I was younger. I'm not recommending that people read these books in this order; but if you've read any of the books, then this list may help you estimate the relative difficulty levels of other books.
Ages 1-8
(I didn't read books because I was moving back and forth between China and America and relearning the two languages each time.)
Age 8-12
Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
Charlotte's Web is the story of a little girl named Fern who loved a little pig named Wilbur—and of Wilbur's dear friend Charlotte A. Cavatica, a beautiful large grey spider who lived with Wilbur in the barn.
With the help of Templeton, the rat who never did anything for anybody unless there was something in it for him, and by a wonderfully clever plan of her own, Charlotte saved the life of Wilbur, who by this time had grown up to quite a pig.
Stuart Little by E.B. White

Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard Atwater

Before long, something must be done lest the penguins eat the Poppers out of house and home.
