Charles Dickens was born on February 7,1812 in Hampshire, England. In 1822, his family moved to London, where his father, John Dickens worked as a clerk. Dickens’ family was considered middle class. However, in 1824, John Dickens was imprisoned for
debt, bringing the family to financial disaster and leading to Dickens, the oldest child, being sent to work in a shoedye factory.
Months later, Dickens’ father was set free. Although Dickens’ mother wanted him to stay at work, his father, who had now given up his expensive spending habits, got him to return to school. His schooling ended forever when Dickens returned to work at the age of 15. He became a clerk in a law firm, then a shorthanded reporter in the courts. In 1833, Dickens began to write short stories. He published the Pickwick Papers in 1836, and in the same year married Catherine. Within several months, Dickens became internationally popular. He left his position as a newspaper reporter and became editor of a monthly magazine.
Dickens finished Oliver Twist in 1837. Beginning with A Christmas Carol in 1843, Dickens began to publish annual Christmas stories. Later, Dickens actively fought for social issues in the community and began to directly address social issues in his novels. He finished Hard Times(1854), A Tale of Two Cities(1859) and Great Expectations(1860--1861). His works had always reflected the pains of the common people, but works such as Bleak House(1852--1853)and Our Mutual Friend(1864--1865)expressed his progressing anger and disappointment to society. In 1858, Dickens began a series of paid readings, which became instantly popular. The readings often left him exhausted and ill although the satisfied his biggest wish to communicate with the audience. In 1860 he divorced Catherine. He was forced to give up his reading tours due to his declining health and died suddenly at home on June9, 1870.

The Special Olympics are an international program of sports training and athletics. The mission of this organization is to promote the Olympic sports training and practice for people who are mentally disabled, to provide them with continuous opportunities of psychic and physical development, to encourage them to demonstrate courage and
capacity and to motivate them to be happy with their families, their friends and the whole community.
In 1960, it organized sports and game specially for disabled people. Mrs Kennedy felt that these people were more capable of physical activities than experts thought.
About 3% of the world population are mentally disabled. Around 60% of them have a light mental deficiency(缺陷), 30% have moderate deficiency and 10% have a serious and deep deficiency. Down’ s syndrome(唐氏综合症) is the most common mental deficiency. One child in 600 is affected by it and it results in a moderate and serious deficiency. But they can live, with the correct support, fully utilizing their psychic and physical potential. This certainly is a guideline for the Special Olympics.
The Special Olympics’ oath is: Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

One Thousand &One Night
There was once a king who had a beautiful wife. He loved her very much, but she was a wicked(恶毒的) woman. When the king discovered her wickedness, he killed her. He decided that all women were wicked and that he would punish them. He gave orders that he cut off her head and marry again. This went on for some time and all the people were unhappy.
Now the king had a Chief Minister who had a beautiful daughter. She had read many books and knew all the stories of the world. She decided that she would try to cure the
king of his madness. Her father was horrified and tried to persuade her to change her mind, but she would not. She was determined. “I shall marry him,” she said. “And perhaps I can make him stop this mad murder. If not, I shall die myself.”
The king was delighted and the marriage took place at once. At night, the new queen told the king a very interesting story. And when she reached the most exciting part of all, she stopped the story and said, “What a pity that I am going to be killed tomorrow! The next part of the story is even more exciting.” The king thought, “There is no need to kill her tomorrow. I will wait until the day after, and then I can hear the end of the story.”
But the second night, the queen finished the story and began another. Again she stopped at a very exciting place and her life was saved. On the third night the same thing happened.
This went on night after night until they had been married a whole year, and a beautiful son was born to the queen. The king now loved his wife and understood that there were good and bad women just as there were good and bad men. He felt ashamed of his wrong actions and he killed no more women. They lived peacefully together.
