Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there?s no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children?s curiosity. Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now that we?ve finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”
After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper(蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”
This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.
Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical, complete and creative answers.
Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don?t jump in with “That?s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying, “That?s interesting” or “I?d never thought of it that way before”, or coming up with more questions or ideas. Never push a child to “think”. It doesn?t make sense. Children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What?s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target for your disagreement.
Lastly, show; don?t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass, and they?ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates, set a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop.
64. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important thing for adults to do is _____.

?How lucky you are to be a doctor…? Anyone who?s a doctor is right out of luck, I thought. Anyone who?s studying medicine should have his head examined. You may think I want to change my job. Well, at the moment I do. As one of my friends says—even doctors have a few friends—it?s all experience. Experience! I don?t need such experience. I need a warm, comfortable, undisturbed bed all my own. I need it badly. I need all telephones to be thrown down the nearest well, that?s what I need.
All these thoughts fly round my head as I drive my Mini through the foggy streets of East London at 3:45 a.m. on a December morning. I am a ministering angel in a Mini with a heavy coat and a bag of medicines. As I speed down Lea Bridge in the dark at this horrible morning hour, the heater first blowing hot then cold, my back aching from the car-seat, I do not feel like a ministering angel. I wish I were on the beach in southern France. Call me a bad doctor if you like. Call me what you will. But don?t call me at half past three on a December morning for an ear-ache that you have had for two weeks.
Of course, being a doctor isn?t really all bad. We do have our moments. Once in a while people are ill, once in a while you can help, once in a while you get given a cup of tea and rock-hard cake at two o?clock in the morning—then you worry if you have done everything. But all too often ?everything? is a repetitious rule: look, listen, feel, tap. Pills, injection, phone, ambulance, away to the next.
And then there is always the cool, warm voice of the girl on the switchboard of the emergency bed service who will get your patient into hospital for you—the pleasant voice that comes to you as you stand in the cold, dark, smelly, dirty telephone box somewhere in a dangerous section of town. Oh, it has its moments, this life does.

Around the Family Drum
The power of the family drum remains tied to my heart. Every winter as long as I can 36 , family and friends gathered at my grandfather?s home in the traditional village of Taos Pueblo, New Mexico, on January 6.
I remember 37 great fondness as a young boy watching and eventually 38 the buffalo dance during the day. In the evening my grandfather?s home became the central 39 place for family, friends and relatives.
My father loved to 40 , the old Taos Pueblo and Apache round dance songs dating back 41 the late 1800s. I would watch him close his eyes and he seemed to travel back in time trying to 42 a particular sage?s (先哲的)song. With a growing smile, he would start beating the 43 and introduce an ancient song.
The day I was finally 44 to sit around the family drum was a 45 time for me, involving extreme boyhood concentration, not only to memorize the 46 , but also to beat the drum on tempo(节拍)and put the singing together with the drum beat. I made my share of 47 , and I must have sounded like a young wolf howling among those more experienced, 48 in time I gained confidence, and a voice 49 enough to start leading some of the songs.
Sitting around the family drum with my father and uncles brought me a sense of great comfort and inner 50 . It was a wonderful experience to be 51 around the circle of love, acceptance and teaching.
Sometimes while we were singing, there might 52 a knock at the door. In Pueblo tradition, the person outside would peek his head in and 53 say, “I heard the drum, and I wanted to ask 54 to enter your house you ?my? grandfather would permit it! ” My grandfather would 55 nod and tell the visitor to enter and join us around the drum.
These are unforgettable memories, I often close my eyes and can hear uncles and my beloved father now departed singing around the family drum!
