How are you getting on these days?

The 2015 summer holiday is coming. The following is what I’ll do during the holiday.

During the 40-day holiday, I’ll help my mother do some housework at home. Besides, I’m going to visit my grandparents and my friends. Parks are my favorite places where I often play games together with my classmates. My classmates and I will have a get-together in the People’s Park. I enjoy travelling very much. Going sightseeing is my another arrangement and I’ll take a cycling trip to Chaya Mountain, after which I’ll go for a visit to places of interest in Beijing. My summer homework is to be finished after my trip to the capital. I wonder what your summer vacation will be like.

I’m looking forward to your early reply.

Yours faithfully, Li Hua

M: But the wind is cooling things off now, isn’t it? Text 2

M: Could you please tell me where I could get some batteries for my camera?

W: Yes. Go down this street, turn right at the second crossing, and walk past a market. You will find a camera shop right next to the cinema. Text 3

M: Can you tell me how much a ticket is for Saturday’s performances of Macbeth?

M: The front rows and the circle are the most expensive at $260. The middle seats cost $150, and the back three rows cost $120, but the view isn’t so good from there. M: I’ll have two in the middle, please. Text 4

M: Have you seen Susan recently? W: No. She’s not in Los Angeles now.

M: Has she gone to London for a vacation?

W: Actually, she’s in Sydney right now enjoying a vacation with her mother. Text 5

W: What’s wrong? Didn’t you perform well in the speech contest? M: Actually I didn’t go at all. W: Why? Were you scared?

M: No. My mother suddenly became ill. I had to take her to the hospital. Text 6

M: Hi, little sister. How was your first week away at college?

W: Well, I have to say that dormitory living has some major negatives? M: Like what?

W: It’s kind of disgusting to have to share a bathroom with other people, and some of my neighbors party on school nights. The other night, I had my first exam, and I was trying to get a good night’s sleep, but it was impossible — they were so noisy.

M: Yeah, that sure sounds like dorm life! That’s why I moved out my second year. W: I think I will, too. Text 7

W: How much longer do we have to wait? I really can’t stand the heat in the car any longer. M: I’m sure David will get here in about twenty minutes. I’m sorry the car broke down. W: It’s not your fault, but you really need a new car. Why not buy a new one?

M: Actually I’m considering not getting another car. I want to drive less and walk more. W: So you want to live a healthier life?

M: Yes. You know, if we all used our cars as little as possible, our earth would be a much better

place.

W: I agree, but it would be very inconvenient. Text 8

W: How are you feeling? M: Still terrible.

W: Still?Didn’t you start feeling like this on Monday? It’s been three days, hasn’t it? M: Yes. I’m afraid I have to see a doctor.

W: What? You still haven’t gone to see a doctor? I thought you did that yesterday. M: No. I just bought some pills yesterday, but they didn’t seem to work for me.

W: It seems you’ve been catching cold very easily over the past several months. You know you

should probably play computer games a bit less and spend some time working out in the gym.

M: You’re right. I need to become stronger. I really don’t like feeling this way.

W: Nobody does. I have nothing to do this afternoon. How about going to the hospital now? I

can give you a lift.

M: That’s great. Thanks, Anna. You’re always there for me. Text 9

M: Are you all right, Kim? You look terrible.

W: I’m fine. I just stayed up too late last night. I didn’t go to sleep until 2 am, and then I got up at

6:30 this morning.

M: Did you stay up late for a football game again? W: No. I was studying for an English exam.

M: You shouldn’t stay up so late before an exam. I read an article the other day that said students

really should get a good night’s sleep before an exam.

W: I know that, but I hadn’t prepared well for the exam. I had no choice. I certainly won’t do that

again. I feel terrible now, and my head aches a little. I really need to sleep well tonight. M: Do you have an exam tomorrow?

W: Yes, but I’m not worried about it at all. I’m good at math. Physics is the real headache for me. M: Kim, have you considered which college to go to after high school?

W: Not yet, but my mother hopes I’ll go to either Yale or Brown. What about you? M: Harvard. That’s my biggest dream. Text 10

Last night, I read a news article online about a United Nations report on global warming. According to the report, 2013 was probably one of the 10 warmest years since 1850.

The report shows temperatures in different areas of the world. The report says most of the world’s land areas had temperatures higher than normal for nine months in 2013, from January to September. Australia had a very strong heat wave. Record high temperatures were also reported in parts of North America and north Africa. The report says record-breaking rainfall and snow fell in many parts of North America. Many scientists are worried about carbon dioxide, which stays in the atmosphere for centuries. However, the report calls for reducing pollutants that do not last as long. It says methane, for example, disappears after about 12 years. Black carbon from open-fire cook stoves stays in the air for just days or weeks. These pollutants speed up warming.

I’ve decided to do what I can to help prevent global warming. For example, I’ve decided to stop asking my father to drive me to school from tomorrow on. Instead, I’ll take the bus or ride a bike. I hope we can all do our best to help prevent global warming.
