After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.

During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩症).When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams.

I spent over and hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, ―Why me?‖ He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me. When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, ―You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.‖

Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before: Dear Rick,

My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live anymore. But I still smile as much as I can.

I told you someday I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I will never get to do that. But I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.

Your friend, Matthew

―There is an out-of-date idea that children grow up and leave home when they’re 18, and the truth is far from that,‖ says Mr. Larry Bumpass of the University of Wisconsin. Today, unexpected numbers of young adults are living with their parents. ―There is a great change in the middle class,‖ declares Allan Schnaiberg of Northwestern University, whose son, 19, moved back in after an absence of eight months.

Scientists show a number of reasons for this return to the rest. The marriage age is rising, a condition that makes home and its pleasantness particularly attractive to young people. A high divorce rate and a low remarriage rate make some difference. For some, the expense of an away-from-home college education has become so great that many students now attend local schools. Even after graduation, young people find their wings tied by terrible housing coats.

Living at home, says Knighton, a schoolteacher, continues to give security and moral support. Her mother agreed. ―It’s strange for the kids to pay all that money for rent. It makes sense for kids to stay ate home.‖ But sharing the family home requires changes for all. There are the hassles over bathrooms, telephones and privacy. Some families, however, manage the careful balancing act. But for others, it proves too difficult. Michelle, Del Turco, 24, has been home three times and left three times. ―What I considered a social drink, my dad considered an alcohol problem,‖ she explained. ―He never liked anyone I dated, so I either had to hide away or meet them at friends’ houses.‖

Just how long should adult children live with their parents before moving on? Most scientists feel lengthy homecomings are a mistake. Children can end up with a sense if defeat and failure. And aging parents, who should be enjoying some freedom, find themselves stuck with too many things. Many agree that brief visits, however, can work well.

In reading the world's great literature on human excellence and personal success, I've found that to launch ourselves into a life of true success we need to satisfy one basic condition: pursue our vision with stubborn (顽强的) consistency. The biggest difference between people who succeed

and those who don't is not usually talent but persistence.

On my way to work one morning, I met Rudy Ruettiger, who is now a motivational speaker. He has grown up in Joliet, listening to stories about Notre Dame and dreaming of one day playing football there. Friends told him he wasn't a good enough student to be admitted. So he gave up his dream and went to work in a power plant.

Then a friend was killed in an accident at work. Shocked, Rudy suddenly realized that life is too short not to pursue your dreams.

In 1972, at the age of 23, he enrolled at Holy Cross Junior College in South Bend, Ind. He got good enough grades to transfer to Notre Dame, where he finally made the football team as a member of the ―scout team‖, the players who help the team prepare for games.

Rudy was living his dream, almost. But he wasn't allowed to suit up for the games themselves. The next year, after Rudy requested it, the coach told Rudy he could put on his uniform for the season's final game. And there he sat, on the Notre Dame bench during the game. A student started shouting, ―We want Rudy!‖ Soon others joined in. Finally, at the age of 27, with 27 seconds left to play, Rudy Ruettiger was sent onto the field-and made the final tackle (阻截). So his team won the game.

When I met Rudy 17 year later, it was in the parking lot outside Notre Dame stadium, where a camera crew was filming scenes for Rudy, a motion picture about his life. His story illustrates that there is no limit to where your dreams can take you.

68. The writer believes that the key to achieving success is________________ . A. developing one's talent B. seizing opportunities C. having wide vision D. sticking to one's goal

69. According to the passage, Rudy once gave up his dream of playing football for Notre Dame because____________ .

A. his friend was killed there B. his foot was injured in an accident C. he lacked confidence in himself D. he failed in the entrance examination 70. Rudy quit his job in the power plant because______________ . A. his friend encouraged him to B. his outlook on life changed

C. he was disappointed in his future D. he was shocked by his friend's death 71. Rudy was transferred to Notre Dame_____________ . A. as a good student B. as a good player C. with the help of a coach D. with the help of a friend

72. A camera crew was making a movie about Rudy's life because__________ . A. Rudy was the oldest player at Notre Dame B. Rudy succeeded in realizing his dream C. Rudy was the best speaker at Notre Dame D. Rudy succeeded in developing his ability

BAGHDAD(Reuters)—Iraq urged Arabs on Monday to seek martyrdom by attacking U.S. forces in Kuwait, saying the Americans were preparing to occupy Iraq.

―We in Iraq and in the entire (Arab) nation believe that every faithful Arab has the right, duty, and the honor to deal with these forces in Kuwait,‖ a spokesman for the assembly told the state Iraqi News Agency(INA).

INA said the spokesman was replying to the comments by al-Attiya, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), in which he turned down an apology by President Saddam Hussein to the Kuwaiti people for the 1990 invasion.

Saddam apologized Saturday for his 1990-1991 invasion of the country, but scolded Kuwaiti rules for conspiring with Washington against the Baghdad government.

Kuwait turned down the apology and said Saddam's message amounted to ―incitement for

terrorism‖.

The Iraqi spokesman said: ―Does Attiya not know that the U.S. forces occupy Kuwait, start out from there to destroy the Iraqi and kill the Iraqis, and that the US army forces plan to occupy Iraq?‖

The GCC is made up of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman.

UAE Information Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zaid al-Nahayan said Saddam’s speech had cost Baghdad what support it had left in the Arab world.

―I believe the speech cost the Iraqi leadership any pity it had left and further proved the

weakness of Iraq's political and media credibility at a time when Iraq needs to try its best to get rid of the threat of a face off,‖ Sheikh Abdullah told the official Kuwait News Agency.
