Lunchtime was my favorite subject when I was at school. I was really good at it. Plus, I loved school lunches.
Many students don’t share my love. A lot of students bring their own lunches to school. Their mothers might make them sandwiches or leftovers from last night’s dinner.
But not me ! I couldn’t wait for the school’s hot lunch. At the beginning of each month a calendar(日历) was handed out. On it was the hot lunch schedule for that month. I used to circle the days I was excited for chicken fingers. Mexican casserole(焙盘).Every Friday they served pizza. With the lunches they sometimes had little potatoes we call tater tots.
I loved waiting in line and talking with my friends. For only one point thirty-five dollars, which is very cheap, you would get a tray (托盘)with different foods on it and a cup of milk. I always got chocolate milk. But don’t tell my mother, she didn’t know. Then you’d carry your food to your lunch table and sit down with your friends. Boys rarely sat with girls. We’d talk about sports and TV while we ate lunch. When we finished we usually played a game with a paper football until we got in trouble.
In school lunch was more than a time to eat. For me it was the best part of my day!

“Class, tomorrow I want you to bring a cup of macaroni ( 通心粉 ) for our craft class, OK?” These words from my teacher repeated in my mind all day. I was afraid of the next day because I knew we had no macaroni at home. Living in an alcoholic(含酒精的) environment, we never had too much of anything except beer bottles.
I went home after school. Where could I find macaroni? I knew that the local bottle shop gave ten cents for a beer bottle, so I decided to sell some bottles to get money for macaroni.
I started collecting the bottles and sold them. I earned eighty cents. Although I did my best, I still had no macaroni for my craft class.
“Weren’t you listening when I asked you to bring it, John?” my teacher asked.
I was embarrassed. I didn’t know what to say and other children started laughing. Then a little girl, Rosalyn, who sat beside me, turned to me and said, “You can have some of mine.” She gave a bag of macaroni to me. The kindness in her eyes made me start to cry and I ran out of the room in shame.
I never took her macaroni or thanked her for her bag of kindness. However, I often think about Rosalyn and the way she turned to save me that day. Once, I spent a great deal of my life letting anger and hurt surround me. I kept kind people like Rosalyn away, but after that class, I changed my attitude. I thanked all the people like Rosalyn that made this world a better place to live in.

Have you heard about “Survival Holidays”? “Survival Holidays” is for children to go into the lonely place for exciting activities. Now about 1,100 companies are allowed to take children into the great outdoors without their parents.
The reason why people like “Survival Holidays” is that they think being close to nature is good for children. Many children in big cities spend all time watching TV and playing computer games. “Survival Holidays” gives them an important change.
Is “Survival Holidays” a wonderful idea? Maybe it is. Children need more free time to play. They need to be left on their own, without adults disturbing them. Parents care too much about their children. They like to see the children being busy with activities that are controlled by adults, which causes many problems. Children don’t know what to do when they are in danger. Even something like crossing a small river seems to be a hard challenge. Children are not comfortable with danger. Even slight danger like getting their feet wet or falling down seems very terrible to them.
Many people think the survival activities are good for children. Even years later, they will still remember what they have learned. Some have learned to stay calm in different times. Some have learned how to keep safe. Others have learned how to work in a team. All these skills will help them a lot in their lives.
