The Influence of English Pronunciation on Listening and
Solutions
Abstract: Nowadays, English is widely used throughout the world. In the field of economical development and cultural communication, English plays a significant role. However, speaking and listening seem to be the most important parts. They are connected with each other. Correct pronunciation will serve to improve listening. While excellent listening ability can not be separated with good pronunciation. The essay illustrates the importance of listening and pronunciation as well as their relationship. With some examples, the essay points out a series of problems in listening and pronunciation. Finally, in order to develop the English comprehensive ability, the essay offers several measures, for instance, improving traditional teaching methods, creating the English environment which we can combine listening and speaking.

摘 要：英语是世界上广泛使用的一门语言，在经济发展和文化交流中发挥着不可替代的作用。听力和发音是英语综合技能的重要组成部分，两者相互影响，相互联系。标准的发音有利于听力水平的提高，听力水平的不断提高在一定程度上又促进发音的标准化。本文首先阐述了英语发音和听力的重要性及其关系，接着又举例指出英语学习过程中出现的一系列听力及发音问题。最后，从英语教学的角度提出应对措施，如纠正传统英语教学方法，创造一个英语语言环境，使听力与发音结合在一起，从而提高学生的英语综合能力。

1. Introduction：
English is the most prevailing language in the world, and it is also most widely spoken of all the language. It is mother tongue in some important countries, such as the USA, England, Australia and so on. In India, though it is not the mother tongue, it is the important official language. In China, English is spoken as an important and useful foreign language. We need to learn English because with our country’s development, there are more and more opportunities for us to visit other countries. If we want to communicate

with foreigners who do not know how to speak Chinese, we need to speak English. It’s important for us to learn English because we want to learn other people’s technologies and cultures, therefore we can improve our knowledge.
2. The Importance of Speaking and Listening
2.1 The Importance of English Listening
Statistic shows that, the common man spend 45% of their time on listening, 30% on speaking, 6% on reading, only 9% on writing in their daily life. It is thus obvious that listening is important in the above four linguistic skills. It is very necessary to develop a high level of proficiency in listening.
The famous linguist Krasner once said that “listening comprehension is the first-class in language learning, the training of listening should be put ahead”. Listening is an essential skill for communication. Listening, quite possibly is the most important of the language skills, since people spend approximately 60% of their time listening. In addition, listening will give you an opportunity to get a “feel” for the language and will help you improve your overall ability. If you don’t learn to listen effectively, you will not be able to participate in conversations in the foreign language.
As we can see, to be able to listen well gives one confidence in communication. One can only talk sensibly when you can understand what is said to you. Failing that, one may miss important information presented to you or respond in a funny way. Unlike reading, we often don’t have the chance to adjust the pace of speech, listen again or check an unknown word. The need to understand that we hear on the spot makes it even more crucial that we should develop the ability to listen well.
Having studied English for years, many students still are not able to communicate with foreigners smoothly. The most important reason is that they can not understand what the foreigners say. Without listening ability, English will no longer a language. Because you cannot understand what others talk about and there will be no communication! So listening can help us talk just like in Chinese. Listening can also assist us with writing. If we hear from listening more, we will get more inspiration in our articles. In addition to this, listening test accounts for a large proportion in the Test for English Majors. To your

surprise, listening will please us a lot and let us enjoy music, situations and stories which are full of happiness and sadness. Therefore, English listening ability is an important part of English majors in the process of English listening learning. 2.2 The Importance of Speaking
It’s known that the goal of learning a foreign language is to communicate and communicative ability is mainly embodied as spoken English. It is an important part of everyday interaction. Speaking is the skill that the students will be judged upon most in real life situations. Finally speaking is an activity undertaken by people as a vehicle for communication today. During oral expression, a person can not only speak but also speak clearly, and understand what other persons are saying. In foreign language learning, speaking is regarded as a productive skill. It’s more basic and mostly used in international communication.
As we all know, listening comprehension is a kind of basic ability for the contemporary English majors. The purpose of English teaching is to improve the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. But the final purpose is to let the students be able to use the language. However, to communicate easily, you must be a good listener at first. And it is reported that listening wins the first place. Unluckily, it is difficult for Chinese students to master it.
3. The Relationship between Listening and Speaking
With China’s entry to World Trade Organization, trade and the communication with other nations have flourished. The Chinese government has seen proficiency in communicative English as an essential factor to the successful implementation of the policy. However, the traditional English education failed to meet the demand of social development. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing all play important roles in communication, but most of the students do better in reading and writing than in listening and speaking. The students 'oral language competence can’t keep pace with the progress of the society. Investigation shows that, in China, the most difficult skill for students to master is listening. Some of them even have difficulty in understanding their teacher who gives lessons in English. As we all know, human beings come into contact with language and

learn it through listening first. Listening plays an essential role in English teaching. It is very necessary to identify the factors that have greatest influence on listening ability. As for speaking, it is the basic form of language. As far as a language’s origin, development and application are concerned, spoken language should be given priority to. In English learning, a large number of students are poor at their spoken English. They can hardly communicate with others in English after years of learning. Speaking is quite a headache to both teachers and students. Researchers have noticed a common phenomenon that students who are not good at English listening are also not good at speaking. Is there any relationship between the two problems? The answer is yes.
The earliest research on listening and speaking can be traced back to 2000 BC, the ancient Greece times. Aristotle discussed the language art for the speech effect and put forward the conception of speaker, listener and speech. With the development of society, many communication theories such as Speech Act, Indirect Speech Act and Ethnograph of speaking come out. They are all proceeding from actual conditions of communication, harmonious relationship between speaker and listener, the consistency of word. However, the interrelationship between listening and speaking ability is very little covered. Since 1970s, emphasis on teaching languages for proficiency and stress on language as a means of communication have given a new dimension to language teaching. In recent years, teachers of English and experts have realized the importance of improving oral competence in English learning. Through investigation, they found that, listening and speaking have many common foundations. They interact with each other in the process of communication and are mutually promoted. It will be very helpful in improving oral competence if learners combine listening practice with speaking practice. 3.1 Common foundation ·Common physical foundation
