摘 要
随着世界经济的发展，国家间的贸易往来日益密切。其中，工程机械类的产品贸易占着十分重要的位置。2008年底开始的一场百年难遇的经济危机席卷了全球，中国制造业在这场经济风暴中也遭受了沉重的打击。短短几个月间，沿海城市数万家出口加工型工厂倒闭，大量工人失业，地方经济遭受重创。这些现象的背后除了这些工厂技术陈旧、工艺低下外，无法提供完善和全面的售后服务也是其难以抵御世界经济危机的重要原因。售后服务中的第一步，也是最关键的一步就是对产品的介绍，即：产品使用说明书的制作。以中国的工程机械制造业为例，向国外出口的产品，大部分企业无法提供详细而又准确的英文使用说明书，以致客户无法按照正常的流程进行作业或者是凭借以往欧洲产品的使用经验来操作中国产品，因此造成了机器损毁或是报废，甚至酿成了严重的生产事故。由此可见，对产品说明书的准确翻译是至关重要的。一种产品，不管使用了多么先进的制作工艺，具有多么优良的质量品质，最终都要交到客户手中，由客户使用。那么，如何让客户准确地按照厂家设定的程序和方法去使用该产品则是产品生产者所要考虑的首要问题。
和其他特殊用途英语的翻译相比，关于工程机械类产品说明书翻译的研究相对较少，几乎没有此类的翻译专著。通过阅读及比较相关资料，作者发现一些有关说明书翻译的研究以经验为主，侧重于译例的描述，缺乏整体性，很少融入当前科学翻译理论的指导。本论文的创新点从功能派翻译理论中的目的论出发来探讨工程机械类产品说明书的翻译，全文分为五个部分：在第一章中作者引入了本文研究的课题，并论述了该课题的研究背景及现状；第二章介绍了产品说明书的特点；第三章阐述了本文的理论依据，即目的论这一研究方法；第四章为全文的主体部分，论述了目的论在工程机械类产品说明书翻译中的应用；最后在第五章得出结论，目的论对工程机械类产品说明书翻译有着巨大的指导作用，能帮助译者译出读者和商家都满意的说明书。
