W: Hmm. I don't know if I'd call that a good spirit or just a thick skull.

听下面一段对话,回答第15至第17三个小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

(Text 9)

W: What does it look like? Am I all right? M: Well, there is definitely one hole.

W: How did that happen? I brush my teeth three times a day.

M: Don't worry. It's not your fault. Holes are just a natural occurrence for most people. I'd like to take xrays of your mouth to see if there are others.

W: How long will that take?

M: Oh, it should just be a few minutes. We'll try and get them filled before you leave today. W: Will it hurt much?

M: No, no, don't be scared. It's not going to hurt and it will only take an hour or so. W: Well, OK, but can you put me to sleep first?

M: That's totally unnecessary. I'm telling you, it won't hurt that bad. Besides, the medication that it takes to make a person unconscious is more dangerous than the minor attention your hole will require.

W: I'll try to bear it, but I'm very scared of the pain.

M: That's natural. But I promise you. This should be very easy. And in the long run this is definitely the best thing. If you wait till later, it will just get worse.

W: All right. I suppose you know better than I do.

听下面一段独白,回答第18至第20三个小题。现在,你有15秒钟的时间阅读这三个小题。

(Text 10)

W: Did you know that there's a kind of bird that can sew? This is called the tailor bird and it uses its mouth as a needle. It sews leaves together in the shape of a cup. Then it adds a layer of straw to the inside of the cup and lays its eggs there. Each bird species builds its own special kind of nest. The most common materials used for nests are grasses, branches and feathers. A bird must weave these materials into a nest.

Another bird is called the weaver bird. The weaver bird builds a nest that looks like a basket—the nest shaped like a pear with a hole in the middle. The hole is the door of the nest. Not all birds make their homes in branches. Some birds build their nests on the ground while others bury their eggs under the ground. And some birds do not build nests at all. So when you look for nests and eggs in branches of the trees and bushes, remember that some nests may be right under your feet.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的4个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Christmas dinner at Bruce Sweetser and Denali Delmar's house will come in part from their backyard garden. And this retired couple will add another locally grown delicious food to their menu.

“We started harvesting road-killed deer last year,” Bruce explained. His fridge is filled with meat harvested from deer killed in car accidents. Bruce and his wife think it is a right road toward a greener life. Their idea might best be described as locavorism (本土膳食主义). And they believe that eating local food is healthier and better for the environment.

About two years ago, the couple ran across a car accident. The only victim was a deer. And then they found an interesting list by chance.

In Massachusetts, many deer always rush to the motorway and often cause the accidents. So some Massachusetts police departments keep lists of people interested in harvesting meat if a deer isn't damaged too much after a run-in with a car. There are eight people on the Westford Police Department's official list. In addition, animal control officials also call people to harvest the meat.

But Massachusetts law requires that the driver of the car get first right to the deer. If the driver or passengers don't want to get the deer, then police can give the animal to people living in Massachusetts. In other words, they can go to the list.

Bruce and his wife weren't on the Westford list, when they came across that first deer in 2009. But now, they are, and they have harvested three deer as a result, putting the extra meat in the fridge for regular dinners and special occasions like Christmas.

Khushi Ram, who is a 78-year-old Indian man, shares a house with 12 other family members. Khushi Ram has been married to his wife, Kassmiri for 57 years. “Although we have little money, I have never seen any problem and we are happy to feed our children with whatever we had,” she says. Kassmiri says her husband has taken whatever job he could do to support his family. She is clearly proud and grateful for this chance to tell the world how happy her family is.

I am impressed with how well the family members get on with each other. Four generations not only share one roof but one bank account. Ram Avtar, a son of Khushi Ram, works for a big company. Khushi Ram's other son runs a coffee shop. His grandson sells auto parts and second-hand cars.

I also notice there always seems to be someone watching grandpa, Khushi Ram's father Hartman, who is blind. Whether he knows it or not, there is always someone just making sure that if he ever does need help, someone will be right there. “In another country, in another life you might be on your own,” Hartman said. “If I were in a bad situation and were driven away like flies from milk, then what kind of a family would that be?”

In America, a lot of parents say the last thing they want is to be a burden on their children. Also,

a lot of children don't want to be burdened by their parents. It is too bad that we can't all see like the blind man.

26.What can we know from the passage? A.Hartman used to be able to live on his own. B.Khushi Ram's mother looks after Hartman. C.The family is sure of living a richer life in the future. D.Hartman feels fortunate enough to live in the family.

答案:D 推理判断题。结合第四段中Hartman所说的话可推知,Hartman感到能够生活在这个家庭很幸运。

27.The author thinks that ________.

A.such a good family can't be found in America B.Indian parents feel happier than those in America

C.the relation between American family members is an example to follow D.American parents don't expect themselves to be their kids' burden

28.What's the best title of the passage? A.Four Generations Under One Roof in India B.The Happiest Family in the World

C.Differences Between an Indian and an American Family D.An Indian Family's Suffering

The ancient Maya mastered the art of ceramic (制陶艺术) in a manner

which virtually no other culture did.

The Vase of the Seven Gods, made in the area of Naranjo, an ancient city of the Maya civilization in the present-day Petén, Guatemala, shows the fine way Maya handled clay.Like all art of Maya, this vase exhibits highly religious symbols. Furthermore, the artist's name is carved along the bottom of this piece in the form of a small white rabbit.

Ceramics also served as reminders of ancestors and gods. The Flour De Lis Vase is a fine example of this. The water lilies are not only symbols of new birth and life giving qualities, but a constant reminder of purity. On this vase, the water lilies are white, which is undoubtedly a sign of purity. The black background shows the sea, in which the lilies float.

Furthermore, ceramics served practical functions in the Maya culture. Vases, which are quite commonly seen today, were used primarily to hold liquid chocolate and cocoa. Bowls were used to hold various maize (玉米) products. Maize was seen as the imaginary body of the Maize God and the ancient Maya thought that as one ate the maize or the body of God from the bowl, they actually became God. Plates were merely used for and object.

Finally, Maya used depictions on ceramics to resurrect (复活) family members and honor gods. Because they believe that they would come back to life with their names spoken or their figures drawn, the carvings and paintings on these ceramics played a vital role in Maya spirituality.

Clearly, ceramics served a key function in ancient Maya society from dinner plates to acts of God.
