On 26th December, 2004, a young girl called Tilly Smith was on holidaywith her family in Phuket, Thailand. No one knew what wasabout to happen --- a tsunami thatwould kill about 200,000 people. Tilly had studied tsunamis in her geography class and had seen a video of a tsunami.
“My mum didn’t realize what was happening,” said Tilly. But Tilly did. “Isaw this bubbling on the water, atthe edge; the water and the foam looked as if they were boiling, and were making a strange noise. The water was coming in, but itwasn’t going out again out again. It was coming in, and in, and in, towards the hotel.” She turned to her mother and sister and told them that it was a tsunami. At first they did not believe her.She was only 10 years old. Maybe she was just hoping to see a tsunami because she had studied it? Tilly’s father went back to the hotel with her sister. They told thepeople who worked in the hotel what Tilly had said. Tilly ran out to the beach,to warn the people there. The hotel workers believed Tilly. They began to getpeople off the beach. Only a few minutes later a huge wave swept over the beach. This beach was one of the fewbeaches in Phuket where no one was killed or seriously hurt. This was all because of 10-year-old Tilly Smith. She and allher family escaped. The pictureshows Tilly a year after the tsunami at a church service to remember the peoplewho died. WORDBANK

We all know that mobile phones are very useful. It’s easy to make plans, and to change them, if you have a mobile phone. So how do mobile phones work?
Mobile phones are also called ‘cell-phones’.This is because of the way they work. Cellsare small parts of living things that all work together for the living thing tosurvive. In the same way, a mobilephone network can’t survive without lots of their kind of cells. Mobile phonecompanies divide countries intoareas they call ‘cells’. Each cell has a basestation that sends signals to your mobile phone inside that cell. The basestation also picks up signals fromyour mobile. This lets you make calls. Cells need to be touching each other for a mobile phone network to work.As you travel, you move from one cell to another. As you move out of a cell, its base station no longer reaches your mobile. But, if the cells are touching, you move into another cell at once. So its base station keeps your mobileworking. Your mobile doesn’t work in any gapsbetween the cells.
