The universe is huge. It seems to have no end. People who study theuniverse find out more about it all the time. Until 2006, students were taughtthat our solar system had nine planets that moved around our Sun.Among them, Mercury come: Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptuneand Pluto.
In August 2006, scientistsdeclared that Pluto is a dwarf planet, which means it is not an ordinary planet. So in fact there are only eightplanets in the solar system! Pluto is not the only dwarf planet in the solarsystem. Earlier in 2005, American scientists discovered a dwarf planet. Thisdwarf planet is further from the Sun than Pluto. It was given a new name ‘Eris’in September 2006. We know that Pluto is very cold and consists mostly of ice and rock. Think how cold Eris must be! Cananything live on dwarf planets? Is there life on any of the planets?
Let’s look at the two planets closest to Earth – Mars and Venus. Becausethey are the closest, we have studied them more, so we have more evidence about them, Satellites have photographed Mars andVenus from space. Some satellites have landed on Mars and Venus, and collectedevidence of what they are like. WORDBANK

初一上英语悦读联播29 MARS
It’s 2050, the Earth is dying, and moving to Mars seems to be the onlyway out for mankind. A team of American astronautsbegin to search on Mars. This is what the movie Red Planet begins with. Knownas the Red Planet, Mars is the favorite of sciencefiction writers and filmmakers.
Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the next planet beyond the Earth. Mars is the onlyplanet whose surface can be seenfrom Earth. It is about half the size of our planet. The ancient Romans named itafter their god of war because of its red color.
The surface of Mars is more like the Earth than any other planet. However, because it is further from the Sun than the Earth, temperatures onMars are much lower. Most of the time the temperatures are far below freezing. Plants and animals could notlive now on Mars. However many scientists believe that such life may haveexisted long ago.
On 6th August, 1996, scientists discovered a piece of rockfrom Mars, which fell to the Earth 13,000 years ago, and in which evidence ofsimple fossile creatures has beenfound. However, 10 years later, some scientists still don’t accept theconclusion that there was life on Mars. People may not be so sure about life onMars until a sample of life isbrought back. WORDBANK

初一上英语悦读联播30 VENUS
At first, scientists thought that Venus was the planet most likely to have other living creatures. They made some discoveries which made them think this. Venus is the closest insize to the Earth. It seemed to be made in a similar way. It was covered by a layer of ‘cloud’.
Later, scientists made more discovered, which made them think there hasnever been life on the planet. The layer of cloud is made from sulphuric acid droplets. The surface ofthe planet is so hot it can melt metal.Any water on the surface would boil awayin the heat.
Now, once again scientists are beginning to think that there was oncelife on Venus, and that maybe some still exists. About 50 km above the surfaceof the planet, it is cooler and there is some evidence of water droplets in theclouds, as well as acid. The chemicalsin the atmosphere of the planet aredifferent from what scientists had expected. Some scientists say the differencecan only be explained by living things changing the atmosphere. Otherscientists are less certain. They say it is too soon to understand chemical reactions on another planet.
So, is there life on other planets? We still don’t know!

The trip to the zoo was for study, as well as a day out. But Class 1didn’t go there to learn about science, they were there for an art lesson!Their art teacher, Mr. Hall, takes the class on a trip to the zoo every year.
“It’s good for the students to get out of the classroom and do art,” hesaid. “It helps them see that you can draw and sketch anything, anywhere. Many students do their best work on thistrip.”
