Do you want to live with a strong sense of peacefulness, happiness, goodness, and self-respect? The collection of happy actions such as “honor” helps you create this life of good feelings. Here?s an example to show how honorable actions create happiness.
Say, a store clerk fails to charge us for an item. If we keep silent, and profit from the clerk?s mistake, we would drive home with a sense of sneaky excitement. Later we might tell our family or friends about our good fortune. However,if we tell the clerk about the uncharged item, the clerk would be grateful and thank us for our honesty. We would leave the store with a quiet sense of honor that we might never share with another person. Then, what is it to do with our sense of happiness?
In the first case, where we don?t tell the clerk, a couple of things would happen. Deep down inside we would know ourselves as a type of thief. In the process, we would lose some peace of mind and self-respect. We would also show that we cannot be trusted, since we advertise our dishonor by telling our family and friends. We damage our own reputations by telling others. But bringing the error to the clerk?s attention causes different things to happen. Immediately the clerk knows we are honorable. Upon leaving the store, we feel honorable and our self-respect is increased. Whenever we take honorable action we gain the deep internal reward of goodness.

“A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right,” says Mollie Hunter. Born and brought up near Edinburgh, Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people. She firmly believes that there is always and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main market is. In Mollie's opinion it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story, which is what every writer should be doing. “If you aren't telling a story, you're a very dead writer indeed,” she says. With the chief function of a writer being to entertain, Mollie is indeed an entertainer. “I have this great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language,” she says. “This love goes back to early childhood. I've told stories all my life. I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up and, because my family always had dogs, and I was very good at handling them, I said I wanted to work with dogs, and the teacher always said ?Nonsense, Mollie, dear, you?ll be a writer.? So finally I thought that this woman must have something, since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine that I would be a writer.”
This childhood intention is described in her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although written in the third person is clearly autobiographical (自传体的) and gives a picture both of Mollie's ambition and her struggle towards its achievement. Thoughts of her childhood inevitably(不可避免地)brought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup meadows and strawberry fields—sadly now covered with modern houses.“I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my childhood. I'll never go back,”she said. “Never.”“When I set one of my books in Scotland,”she said,“I can recall my romantic feelings as a child playing in those fields, or watching the village blacksmith at work. And that's important, because children now know so much so early that romance can't exist for them, as it did for us.”

Most of the people who appear most often and most gloriously in the hitory books are
great conquerors and generals and soldiers, whereas the people who really helped civilision forward are often never mentioned at all.We do not know who first set a broken leg,or launched a seaworthy boat,or calculated the length of the year,or manured a field;but we know all about the killers and destroyers.People think a great deal of them, so much so that on all the highest pillars in the great cities of the world, you will find the figure of a conqueror or a general or a soldier. And I think most people believe that the greatest countries are those that have beaten in battle the greatest number of other countries and ruled over them as conquerors. It is just possible they are,but they are not the most civilized.Animals fight;so do savages;therefore to be good at fighting is to be good in the way in which an animal or a savage is good, but it is not to be civilized.Even being good at getting other people to fight for you and telling them how to do it most efficiently----this,after all,is what conquerors and generals have done----is not being civilized.People fight to settle quarrels.Fighting means killing, and civilized peoples ought to be able to find some way of setting their disputes other than by seeing which side can kill off the greater number of the other side, and then saying that side which has killed most has won.And not only has won, but, because it has won,has been in the right. For that is what going to war means;it means saying that Might is Right.
That is what the story of mankind has on the whole been like.Even our own age has fought the two greatest wars in history,in which millions of people were killed or mutilated. And while today it is true that people do not fight and kill each other in the streets----while,that is to say,we have got to the stage of keeping the rules and behaving properly to each other in daily life----nations and countries have not learnt to do this yet,and still behave like savages . 72.In the first sentense, the author say that____.
A. most history books were written by conquerors and generals and soldiers. B. Those who helped civilization forward is mentioned in any history book. C. History books tell us far more about conquerors and generals and soldiers.
D. conquerors and generals and soldiers should not be mentioned in history books.

Dear classmates:
It?s a pleasure for me to have a chance to make a short speech today. Recently, I have found that some of our classmates study late into the night and do not spare any time to take a rest during the day either, but they often cannot help falling asleep in class. And some classmates seldom have breakfast, which is also a bad habit and will surely do harm to their health.
In my opinion, it?s extremely important for us to have enough sleep and a proper diet. We must learn to make wise use of our time, and only in this way can we keep fit and study well. I wonder if you agree with me.
Thank you for listening!
