Passage Three

Questions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage:

In a family where the roles of men and women are not sharply separated and where many household tasks are shared to a greater or lesser extent, male superiority is hard to maintain. The pattern of sharing in tasks and in decisions makes for equality, and this in turn leads to further sharing. In such a home, the growing boy and girl learn to accept that equality more easily than did their parents and to prepare more fully for participation in a world characterized by co-operation rather than by the “battle of the sexes”.

If the process goes too far and man’s role is regarded as less important – and that has happened in some cases – we are as badly off as before, only in reverse.

It is time to reassess (重新评估) the role of the man in the American family. We are getting a little tired of “Momism” – but we don’t want to exchange it for a “Neo-popism” (新式爸爸主义). What we need, rather, is the recognition that bringing up children involves a partnership of equals. There are signs that specialists on the family are becoming more aware of the part men play and that they have decided that women should not receive all the credit – not all the blame. We have almost given up saying that a woman’s place is in the home. We are beginning, however, to analyze men’s place in the home and to insist that he does have a place in it. Nor is that place irrelevant to the healthy development of the child.

Directions: In this part there is a passage with 5 underlined sections, numbered 76 to 80. After reading the passage carefully, translate the underlined sections into Chinese. Remember to write your translation on the Translation Sheet.

There is much discussion today about whether economic growth is desirable.(76) At an earlier period, our desire for material wealth may have been justified.

TNow, however, this desire for more than we need is causing serious problems. (77) Even though we have good intentions, we may be producing too much, too fast. Those who criticize economic growth argue that we must slow down. They believe that society is approaching certain limits on growth. These include the fixed supply of natural resources, the possible negative effects of industry on the natural environment, and the continuing increase in the world’s population. (78) As society reaches these limits, economic growth can no longer continue, and the quality of life will decrease.

People who want more economic growth, on the other hand, argue that even at the present growth rate there are many poor people in the world.(79) These supporters of economic growth believe that only more growth can create the capital needed to improve the quality of life in the world. Furthermore, they argue that only continued growth can provide the financial resources required to protect our natural surroundings from industrialization. This debate over the desirability of continued economic growth is of vital importance to business and industry. If those who argue against economic growth are correct, the problems they mention cannot be ignored.(80) To find a solution, economists and business community must pay attention to these problems and discuss them with one another. 76.
