Abstract:Port-cityinterface,anareainteractedbythelandforwater-transportation-relatedactivitiesandurbanzones,isacoastalarearepresentingthelinkageofportlandusesandurbanlanduses.Asaprojectionofallsocialforcesandtechnologicaldevelopmentonaspecificspace,theevolutionofport-cityinterfacegoesthroughalifecycleofgrowth,matureandexpansion,declineandabandon,andrevitalization,showingdifferentspatiallinkagebetweenportandcity,respectivelyintegration,mutualexpansion,separationandreintegration.Spatiallyitmigratesfrominnerurbancore,tourbanmargin,andfinallyfurtheraway.Thispaperdescribestheevolutionofport-cityinterfaceinNingboandaimstoexplainitsspatialmechanism.Portsindifferentperiodshavedevelopedport-cityinterfacesofvariousspatialforms.TheancientJiangxiaWharvesdevelopedacomplextractofbusinessandtrade,andtheportcityNingbo;whileJiangbeiTerminaldevelopedacomplexdistrictofwesternstylebusinesscenterandurbancommunity,andthecontempo-raryZhenhaiandBeilunterminalsaredevelopingcomplexzonesofport-relatedcoastalindustriesandlogisticparks.TheNingbocaseshowsthemechanismofspatialevolution,thatthetechnologicalrevolutioninmaritimetransportationandcommunication,andorganizationchangeforcontainerizationandmult-imodaltransportationaretheenginesof
itsspatialmigration,regionallabordivisionindifferentsocio-economicperiodsdeterminestheindustriesandcompanyagglomerationinport-cityinterfaceandthespatialpatterns,themechanismforrevitalizationismostlyfromtheurbanrenewalandpoliticalandeco-nomicdemands,publiccaretoenvironmentalprotectionandlegislationacceleratethesepa-rationofportandcity,andinstitutionreformisacriticalcondition.ThecasealsoshowsthatNingboisborntobeaportcity,withtheexpansionandmigrationofportandport-cityinterface,itisdevelopingintoaportmetropolis.Theresultspointtoaneternaltrendthattheevolutionofport-cityinterfaceisabasicelementforthedevelopmentofanactiveandgrowingportcity,whichcallscreativepoliciesandharmoniouslinkagebetweenportandcity,especiallyinthefutureregionaldevelopmentforenvironmentallyandecologica-l
ly-friendlysociety.
