My girlfriend and I have been staying with my parents here in San Francisco since the 4th of July. My family has been very kind to her during that time and go out of their way to make her feel at home. Naturally, she said “wǒ juéde bù hǎo yìsi” in Chinese. Then she asked me to translate this into English.
I usually find “bù hǎo yìsi” pretty easy to translate, as it often means “sorry” in English. When you?re a little late to a meeting, you can say “sorry”. When you eat the last cookie and then someone else wants one, you can say “sorry”. When you knock into someone on the street, you can say “sorry”.
But in this case, my girlfriend tried to express something like, “it?s very kind of you to make me feel at home,” or “you?re being so nice that it makes me feel indebted.” And she wanted me to think up one easy word or phrase to translate.
