If you’re on the hunt for something new and interesting to read, you have plenty of places to go.

This week, we’re looking at four of the best book recommendation sites, services, or groups, based on your nominations(提名).

GoodReads

GoodReads is more than just a book recommendation site, although it excels at helping you find new books to read based on the ones you enjoy. You can build a virtual “shelf” of books you own or have already read, share your progress with the books you’re currently reading, rate the books you’ve read, leave reviews, and connect with other readers.

BookBub

While BookBub isn’t strictly a book recommendation service, it does bring you super-low-cost books based on your interests every day. The service is free, and when you sign up, you tell BookBub what kinds of books you like to read. From there, you’ll get an email from BookBub every day with book deals for that day. When we say “deal,” we mean it—many of BookBub’s titles are free entirely, $0.99, or just a couple of bucks.

LibraryThing

LibraryThing has been around for a long time and is still a great user-powered book ratings,

review, and recommendation site. The service calls itself the world’s largest book club, and that’s a lot like the overall feel. Once you sign up, you’ll be encouraged to start adding books you’ve read and leave reviews for them. Behind its book ratings and reviews though, LibraryThing is a powerful tool to catalog and organize your entire book collection.

Olmenta

If you’re not interested in registering for accounts, adding your own books, or any of that hassle(麻烦), Olmenta can suggest some solid titles to you based on general popularity and the citation of the people behind the site. It’s a simple list of book covers that the service thinks you should read, and a few genres you can click on if you’re looking for something specific, like business, fiction, children’s, theatre, poetry, or nonfiction, among others.

“If your dreams don’t scare you, they aren’t big enough.” ---- Lowell Lundstrum

Two years ago, I was a freshman at UC Berkeley. I was only 16 and couldn’t believe I was in college. I told myself that I wanted to one day travel the world, but then it was only a “dream”. Two years later, that dream is coming true. I am 18 years, going into my third year at Berkeley, and in six days I will be making my first international trip to the UK. Crazy! I can’t believe how fast the time has flown. My “young” age has always been a big factor in doing a lot of things but I have managed to overcome the age barrier and I won’t let it stop me from accomplishing my goals in life. You can never be too young to live your life to its fullest.

I’m leaving on July 20th, and will return in January. Most of my time will be spent studying at my exchange university in Manchester, but I plan on visiting all of London, a lot of cities within the UK such as Wales, Oxford, Kent, Cambridge along with as many countries as possible in Europe. Currently on my list is Norway, Sweden, France, Italy and Spain. The list will get longer once I get there, I’m sure! Till then, I’m packing, packing, packing and also saying my goodbyes (one of the hardest things to do). This last week is going to be a very emotional week for me but I will use the love of my family and friends to carry me through. I feel like it hasn’t fully sunk in that I won’t be seeing the people I love every day, or that I will be starting over in a strange land. But somewhere

deep inside me, I know that everything is going to be okay. I hope to be sharing my experiences along the way through this journal and hope to keep in touch as much as I can. Ahhhh! Can’t believe it’s almost here!

24. The author will go to UK as a(n) . A. tourist

B. worker

C. exchange student

D. freshman

25. What’s the influence of the “young” age on the author in doing a lot of things? A. It has always been a barrier.

B. It has made no difference to the author.

C. It has kept him from accomplishing his goals in life. D. It has been a big factor helping him doing things better.

26. Which of the following best describe the author’s feelings before leaving for Berkeley? A. worried and discouraged C. happy and thrilled A. a speech

B. excited and concerned D. anxious and sad

C. a journal

27. The passage is probably taken from .

B. a conversation

D. a novel

C

Despite the central role food plays in all of our lives, we let a great deal of it go to waste. About one-third of all food produced in the world goes uneaten each year―a fact that harms our climate, costs the global economy billions of dollars and strains natural resources like water and land. Given the enormous impacts, it’s clear why the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals issued Target 12.3’s call to halve food waste and reduce food losses by 2030.

But with 13 short years to go, is the world doing enough?

According to a new report from Champions 12.3, the progress is promising. Countries or regional blocs that have set specific food loss and waste reduction targets cover an estimated 28 percent of the world’s population. At the same time, nearly 60 percent of the world’s 50 largest food companies have set targets to reduce food loss and waste. More than 10 percent of the 50 largest companies also now have active programs to waste less food.

Meanwhile, initiatives(倡议) have taken off in the European Union, United States, Japan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and in other countries that expand public-private partnerships, government policies and consumer campaigns aimed at reducing food loss and waste.

But it’s not all roses. Only a few countries, accounting for just 7 percent of the world’s population, currently measure and publicly report on how much food is lost or wasted within their borders.

These latest figures beg the question: Can the world really cut global food loss and waste in half by 2030? The answer is yes―but only if many more governments and companies set ambitious targets, measure this inefficiency and take action to reduce food loss and waste. To my mind, there are three immediate challenges that require a collective approach.

28. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “promising” in paragraph 3? A. discouraging. B. surprising.

C. encouraging.

D. limited.

29. According to the report from Champions 12.3, which of the following is true?

A. Nearly 60 % of the largest food companies have set targets to reduce food loss and waste. B. Over 10% of the 50 largest companies now have active programs to waste less food. C. Only 28% of the countries have set specific food loss and waste reduction targets. D. More than 7 % of the countries currently measure and report on how much food is wasted. 30. What’s the main idea of the passage?

A. The world is doing enough in reducing waste. B. A new report from Champions 12.3 was released.

C. One-third of all food produced in the world goes uneaten each year.

D. The world can cut global food loss and waste in half by 2030 with more efforts. 31. What might be discussed after the last paragraph?

A. The immediate measures a single country can take to reduce waste. B. The possibility of cutting food loss and waste. C. The way to solve the problem of food loss and waste. D. Three demanding tasks that need settling together.

D

Our bodies have many clocks that control sleep, health and performance. If we do things at the wrong times, there can be dangerous consequences. This year’s Nobel Prize was awarded to the three scientists who discovered the key genes in circadian (24-hour) body clocks. Their discovery enabled other scientists to discover the thousands of circadian times that control our health, our genes and even when we should have treatments: it can make the difference between life and death.

Major heart surgery is common, but concerned about dangers. The most significant is the importance and duration of interrupting and restarting the body’s oxygenated blood supply. On Friday a study was published on the complications arising from morning and afternoon heart surgery. The time of surgery made a significant difference: 54 (out of 298) patients who had surgery in the morning experienced complications (18% of all patients) compared to 28 (of 298) patients who had surgery in the afternoon (9%). Heart surgery appears to be safer in the afternoon.

The heart has a pretty strong circadian timing system, as is well-known to those in elite sports. According to sports experts, 17:00 (5pm) is the time of greatest cardiovascular (心脏血管的) efficiency and muscle strength. The heart’s circadian strength in the late afternoon may help explain better heart surgery outcomes at that time of day.

Living to our circadian times boosts health; when we do not live to these times we have increased health risks. Greater disease risks arising from circadian disruption have been identified in the brain, pancreas (胰脏) and stress systems. Metabolic (新陈代谢的) studies have found disruption in sleep, liver, gut (内脏) and metabolic systems. These are only some of the

consequences of not living to our body’s circadian clocks.

The links between mental health problems and our circadian clocks are perhaps the strongest of all. Depression is closely associated with awful sleep disorders. Indeed, changes in our circadian patterns are often the first symptom in many other mental illnesses.

32. What is the benefit of the discovery of the key genes in circadian body clocks? A. To discover when we should have treatments. B. To find some cures for some deadly diseases. C. To help the dying people.

D. To discover what controls our health and our genes.

33. The author uses major heart surgery as an example to illustrate ____________. A. heart surgery is not a big deal

B. it doesn’t matter when to have a heart surgery

C. it is definitely not safe to have a heart surgery in the morning D. the circadian timing system means a lot to heart surgery

34. Which of the following is NOT the outcome of not living to circadian times? A. depression.

B. greater disease chances in the brain. D. fewer disease risks in stress systems.

C. disruption in liver .

35. Which of the following may be the best title of the passage? A. When we can have a heart surgery.

B. How the circadian timing system controls our body. C. Why we must listen to the ticking of our body clock. D. What mental health problems we can meet.

How to Make the Right Career Choice

Since finding a job in your career of choice will always be easier said than done, you’ll need to

employ a flexible strategy with multiple avenues involved. Here goes:

Map out your desired career plan.

36 Where do you want to work? What kind of work do you want to do? Is it available in your current town? If you have to move, how soon do you want to do so? And how much money do you need to make the move? Figure out what you want to do and make sure all the decisions you make from now on service that goal. 37

If you have to take a job that you’re overqualified for, maximize the potential at that job.
