The evidence for harmony may not be obvious in some families. But it seems that four out of five young people now get on with their parents, which is the opposite of the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their rooms after endless family quarrels.

An important new study into teenage attitudes surprisingly shows that their family life is more harmonious than it has ever been in the past. “We were surprised by just how positive today’s young people seem to be about their families,” said one member of the research team. “They’re expected to be rebellious and selfish but actually they have other things on their minds; they want a car and material goods, and they worry about whether school is serving them well. There’s more negotiation and discussion between parents and children, and children expect to take part in the family decision-making process. They don’t want to rock the boat.”

So it seems that this generation of parents is much more likely than parents of 30 years ago to treat their children as friends. “My parents are happy to discuss things with me and willing to listen to me,” says 17-year-old Daniel Lazall. “I always tell them when I’m going out clubbing. As long as they know what I’m doing, they’re fine with it.” Susan Crome, who is now 21, agrees. “Looking back on the last 10 years, there was a lot of what you could call negotiation. For example, as long as I’d done all my homework, I could go out on a Saturday night. But I think my grandparents were a lot stricter with my parents than that.”

Questions 29 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.

29. What is the popular image of teenagers today?

【解析】选[B]。短文开头提到,the popularly-held image of unhappy teenagers locked in their rooms after endless family quarrels,即通常人们认为,青少年不愿意和父母们在一起,故答案为[B]。

I first went to Harrow in the summer term. The school had the biggest swimming pool I had ever seen. It was a good joke to come up behind a naked boy, and push him

into the pool. I made quite a habit of this with boys of my own size or less.

One day I saw a boy wrapped in a towel on the side of the pool. He was no bigger than I was, so I thought him a fair game. Coming secretly behind, I pushed him in, holding on to his towel so that it would not get wet. I was surprised to see an angry face come out from the water, and a being of great strength making its way by face strokes to the shore. I fled, but in vain. He overtook me, seized me violently, and threw me into the deepest part of the pool. I soon climbed out on the other side, and found myself surrounded by a crowd of younger boys. “Do you know what you have done?” they said. “It’s Amery; he is in Grade Six. He is champion at gym; he has got his football honor.”

I was frightened and felt ashamed. How could I tell his position when he was wrapped in a bath towel and so small. He didn’t seem pleased at all, so I added in a most brilliant word, “My father, who is a great man, is also small.” At this he laughed, and after some general words about my rude behavior and how I had better be careful in the future, signified the incident was closed.

W: No luck then, John?

M: I’m afraid not, ma’am. Not yet, anyhow. We’re still checking on stolen cars. W: Mm.

M: Where do you think he’ll head for, ma’am?

W: Well, he definitely won’t try to leave the country yet. He may try to get a passport, and he’ll certainly need clothes and money. He’ll probably get in touch with Cornfield for those, so I expect he’ll make for Birmingham. M: Right. I’ll put some men on the house.

W: Yes, do that. Mind you, I doubt if he’ll show up there in person. Hammond’s no fool, you know. I should think he’ll probably use a telephone. M: What about his wife?

W: Mm. I shouldn’t think he’ll go anywhere near her — though he might get her to join him after he’s left the country. And when he does leave, he probably won’t use a major airport, either. So you’d better notify the coastguard, and keep an eye on the private airfields.

M: Right, ma’am. I’d better get his description circulated.

W: Yes. He may change his appearance, of course. And John — be careful. He could be armed. And if I know Hammond, he certainly won’t give himself up without a fight.

M: The summer holiday is coming, but I really don’t know what to do. There doesn’t seem to be any jobs available. W: Why don’t you try house-sitting? Last summer Cindy was a house sitter for the Smiths when they went away on vacation. They hired Cindy to stay in their house because they didn’t want it left empty. M: You mean they paid Cindy just to live in their house?

W: It wasn’t that easy. She had to water the house plants, mow the lawn, and even take care of the pets.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

19. According to the woman, where might the wanted man first go?

make for意为“前往,走向”。 20. How will the wanted man probably get in touch with Cornfield according to the women? 【解析】选[D]。对话中女士分析嫌疑犯不会show up there in person(亲自),而是probably use a telephone(可能会打电话),故[D]为答案。 【点睛】[D]中的make a call是对对话中use a telephone的同义转述。 21. What will the wanted man deal with his wife? 【解析】选[A]。对话中男士询问What about his wife?

[D] He will appear somewhere near her是根据对话中I shouldn’t think he’ll go anywhere near her设的干扰项。

22. According to the police, how will the wanted man try to leave the country? 【解析】选[A]。 对话中女士说,keep an eye on the private airfields,可见女士猜测他会乘坐私人飞机逃跑,故答案为[A]。

Questions 23 to 25 are based on the conversation you have just heard. 23. What did the Smiths do when they left for summer holiday?

24. In what way do homeowners determine the reliability of a house-sitter?

M: I guess it is a little like baby-sitting,except you’re taking care of a house instead of children. W: The Student Employment Office still has a few jobs posted. M: Do I just have to fill out an application?

W: You have to have an interview with the homeowner and provide three references at least.

M: That seems a lot of trouble for a summer job.

W: Well, the homeowner wants some guarantee that they can trust the house-sitter. You know they want to make sure you’re not the type who’ll hold wild parties in their house, or bring a group of friends in with you. M: I see. House-sitters who do that sort of thing probably aren’t paid then.

W: Usually they’re paid anyway just because the homeowners don’t want to make a fuss. But if the homeowner reports it, the house sitter won’t be able to get another job so easily. So why don’t you apply? M: I think I will. Thank you. Section B

You have to have an interview…three references at least,由此可知,房主应该是对the house sitter的相关证件进行核查,故[C]为答案。

25. Why does the homeowner usually pay even if the house-sitters don’t do their job

well?

对话中提到,the homeowners don’t want to make a fuss,由此可知,即使house-sitter没有做好工作,为了不惹麻烦,房主还是会付给对方报酬的,由此可知答案为[D]。

【点睛】make a fuss意为“大惊小怪,小题大做”,[D]中的doesn’t want to bother与此相对应。

The Food and Drug Administration is, again, threatening to impose milk and meat from cloned animals on a public that opposes the technology and its products.

Respected polls report that more than 60% of Americans think animal cloning is immoral, and that most people said they wouldn’t knowingly eat the products even if the FDA approved them. But because the FDA would allow cloned meat and milk to be sold without identifying labels, consumers wouldn’t be able to avoid them. The FDA has consistently tilted toward those who want cloned milk and meat in our food. Agency officials have repeatedly asserted that science shows cloned milk and meat are safe for humans. But the FDA has never published the complete scientific studies it says support that claim.

The argument that cloning is safe for animals is unconvincing. Cloned meat and milk offer no public economic benefits. Having cloned cows produce more milk wouldn’t reduce milk prices. U.S. farmers produce more milk than we drink, and the government is required to buy the surplus. Since 2000, dairy support programs have cost taxpayers more than $5 billion.

Most important, this first decision to advance animal biotechnology raises ethical issues beyond the FDA’s expertise. Techniques used to clone animals will advance the ability to clone humans — and create animals with human genes. Neither the agency nor animal scientists are qualified to tell us whether and when it is ethically acceptable for humans to alter the essential nature of animals. We need a national discussion, including ethicists and religious leaders, to consider the wisdom of cloned and transgenic animals. Given the risk of unintended consequences, we should proceed cautiously. The president should halt further

Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard. 26. What is the speaker’s attitude towards cloning?

The president should halt further FDA action on cloning

27. Why do many people in U.S. buy cloned foods? But because the FDA would allow cloned meat and milk to be sold… be able to avoid them由此可知,[D]为答案。

28. Which statement is true according to the passage? U.S. farmers produce more milk than we drink…,由此可知,美国农民生产了比人们所能消费的更多的牛奶,故[C]为答案。

29. What do we know about cloning technique from the passage? 【解析】选[A]。 Given the risk of unintended consequences, we should proceed cautiously,由此可推断出,克隆产品可能会对人类产生难以预料的后果,故[A]为答案。

【点睛】Given the risk of unintended consequences中的Given是介词,意为“如果有;

FDA action on cloning and set in motion a process for beginning this broader discussion.

China began work on one of the world’s longest bridges in Zhejiang Province On June 8. The 36km bridge over Hangzhou Bay will cut the journey between Ningbo and Shanghai by 120kms.

The construction work is expected to be finished in five years and the bridge will open for traffic in 2009. The project will cost 11.8 billion yuan and is thought to last 100 years.

The bay itself is at the center of a densely-populated region that includes Shanghai on the northern edge and the major port of Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, to the south. Shanghai and Ningbo have close economic ties, but it is 304 kilometers long between the two cities. The bridge will shorten the distance by 120kms. The flat structure could be the longest seacrossing bridge in the world. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the record over water is now held by the lakecrossing bridge in Lousiana, US, at 38.5kms.

Jin Jianming, an official in charge of the Chinese bridge project says that the new bridge reflects China’s growing economic power.

The bridge is also one part of a 5,200 km highway planned as a link between the northern province of Heilongjiang and the southernmost city of Sanya on the island province of Hainan.

Work on the dam began a week after engineers began filling the Three Gorges Dam reservoir on the Yangtze River.

31. What will be the distance between Shanghai and Ningbo when the bridge is completed?

【解析】选[B]。由短文中提到的but it is 304 kilometers long between the two cities. The bridge will shorten the distance by 120kms,由此可推断出,桥建成后上海和宁波之间的距离应是304-120=184kms,故[B]为答案。

32. What is the main purpose of building the longest bridge across the sea? Shanghai and Ningbo have close economic ties(上海和宁波有密切的经济联系),桥建成后将缩短这两座城市之间的距离,由此可推断出建桥的目的是促进经济发展,故[C]为答案。

One of the first questions anybody asks about a new-born is “what is the baby’s name?” Faced with this tiny pink new-born, we want to put a name to it, as if by doing so, we welcome it to this world of individuals. We always name the things we love. A small child will give names to even his tiniest toys or his well-chewed blanket. And the difference between “blankie” and the blanket is an entire personality.

There are many ways to choose a name for a baby. One of the most common is to use an old family name. If the family tie is strong enough, parents are often willing to overlook an unpleasant feeling or meaning. If all the men for five generations have been named Branden, who are you to complain that the name means “smelly hair”? Inspiration need not be limited to the family tree. Pick an attribute, or pick the name of an Italian city where the baby was born. Name the baby after your favorite poet or interesting scent. It can be difficult to find a perfect name for your baby. But the beauty of the process is this. By the time the baby is a few months old, his personality erases all other associations the name may hold, the evil snake or the much-loved poet fades away and the name becomes quite simply the name of your child. And you will have made the right choice.

Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

33. What do we often do with the things we love?

We always name the things we love,可知答案为[D]。

35. What will happen to a baby’s name after several months?

By the time the baby is a few months old…erases all other associations the name may hold,由此可知,几个月以后,婴儿的名字就会失去原有的含义,由此可知[C]为答案。

M: I hear that the make-up in Beijing opera is almost an art form in itself, isn’t it? W: That’s true. Apart from the costumes, the characters are differentiated by their

faces.

M: In what way?

W: There are four main types of character; the lead, the female lead, the painted face and the

clown. Take a careful look at the actors and see if you can tell which is which.

M: That man there with a white nose is the clown. That beautiful girl is the female lead.

W: That’s right. By the way, how old do you think the actress is? M: She looks as if she’s in her teens.

W: In fact, she is in her late forties.

M: My goodness, it’s almost unbelievable! W: That’s where the art comes in Mei Lanfang, a very famous actor, who used to play the role of a young female lead until he was in his seventies.

M: Really? He must be an excellent actor! Well, I can’t tell which the painted face is. W: There are actually more than one. They paint their faces in different patterns with different colors to reveal their characters. Red stands for loyalty, and white for the opposite meaning, black for uprightness and integrity. M: Yes, the make-up seems as much fun as the performance. W: I’m glad you enjoy it.

M: Time to eat!

W: Coming. Oh, I’m starving. M: Good, good.

W: Oh yuck! What’s that? M: Ah, now don’t complain!

W: But what is it, and where is mom?

M: Now, your mom put me in charge of dinner because she’s not feeling well tonight. W: But what is it… and that smell!

M: It’s pizza. I just followed an old family recipe here, and… W: Let me see that… Oh, Dad. M: What?

W: You’re missing a page!

M: Oh, uh, well, uh… well I couldn’t find the second page of the recipe, but don’t worry. I have

plenty of experience around the house. Plenty of experience of cooking. W: That’s not what mom says.

M: Well, wait, wait, here let me try a piece first. Here, let me, let me cool this off here. Oh, yeah.

Oh, this is great stuff. W: Yeah right. Why are you making that face?

M: Well, well, it’s just, just a little rich for me. That’s all.

W: Let me try it Dad. Uh. Dad. You put a little too much salt in it and besides it’s burned. M: Well…

W: And what’s that?

M: Oh, well, well, that’s just part of my own adaptation to the recipe. I added some pumpkin. W: Oh, not another one of your surprises. Pumpkin doesn’t go on pizza! M: Well, okay, well, so what? Uh, what do we do now?

W: Well, how about some cold cereal… You can’t mess up on that, Dad. Section B
