If you find that believing in yourself is a challenge, it is time you build a positive self-image and learn to love yourself.
Self-image is your own mind’s picture of yourself. This image includes the way you look, the way you act, the way you talk and the way you think. Interestingly, our self-images are often quite different from the images others hold about us. Unfortunately, most of these images are more negative than they should be. Thus changing the way you think about yourself is the key to changing your self-image and your whole world.
The best way to defeat a passive self-image is to step back and decide to stress your successes. That is, make a list if you need to, but write down all of the great things you do every day. Don’t allow doubts to occur in it.
It very well might be that you are experiencing a negative self-image because you can’t move past one flaw or weakness that you see about yourself. Well, roll up your sleeves and make a change of it as your primary task. If you think you’re silly because you aren’t good at math, find a tutor. If you think you’re weak because you can’t run a mile, get to the track and practice. If you think you’re dull because you don’t wear the latest trends, buy some new clothes. But remember, just because you think it doesn’t mean it’s true.
The best way to get rid of a negative self-image is to realize that your image is far from objective, and to actively convince yourself of your positive qualities. Changing the way you think and working on those you need to improve will go a long way towards promoting a positive self-image. When you can pat yourself on the back, you’ll know you’re well on your way. Good luck!

【点睛】[C]中的When对应短文中的If, unconfident about ourselves是对believing in yourself is a challenge的同义转述。
27. What do we learn about our self-images from the passage? 【解析】选[A]。 They, changeable, have different functions等表明, 本题考查They(Self-images)的特点。根据短文中的our self-images…are more negative than they should be可确定答案为[A]。more / less…than sth. should be表明人们对self-images的看法不符合事实, 即不正确。
[A]中的untrue对应短文中的more negative。

Traditionally, when a man invites a woman out on a date, he picks her up at her home, pays all the expenses for the evening, and takes her home at the end of the evening. Prior to Women’s Liberation, the woman was expected to sit at home by the phone and wait and hope for the man of her dreams to call her. Today’s liberated woman may take the initiative in suggesting an evening together by inviting a man she likes to a party, to a home-cooked meal, or to an evening at the theater. If she does the inviting, she pays for at least part of the evening’s expenses. Often, a man and a woman who are friends but not romantically involved go out together Dutch treat, which means that each person pays his or her own way.
Today many men working in the U.S.A. have a female boss. Men who come from countries in which the woman’s place is still in the home may find it difficult to take orders from a woman. But in the U.S.A., 44% of the work force is female, and many women are judges, doctors, company presidents, college presidents, and entrepreneurs. It is important for men to respect to a person who holds a position of responsibility and authority, whether that person is male or female. To treat a woman as inferior just because she is female is not only insulting but also out of step with contemporary American culture.
The literal meaning of philosophy is “love of wisdom”. But this meaning does not tell us very much. Unlike the other disciplines, philosophy cannot be defined by what you study, because it is actually unlimited. Anything can be the subject matter of philosophy — art, history, law, language, literature, mathematics, and in fact, the other academic disciplines are directly related to philosophy. For this reason you get a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in biochemistry, or computer science, or psychology.
Two broad sub-fields of philosophy are logic and the history of philosophy. Logic is the science of argument and critical thinking. It provides sound methods for distinguishing good from bad reasoning. The history of philosophy involves the study of major philosophers and period in the development of philosophy.
Of what use is philosophy? First it is useful in educational advancement. It is necessary for understanding other disciplines. Only philosophy questions the nature of the concepts used in a discipline and its relation to other disciplines. And through the study of philosophy, one develops sound methods of research and analysis that can be applied to any field.
There are a number of general uses of philosophy. It strengthens one’s ability to solve problems, to communicate, to organize ideas and issues, to persuade, and to take

the library has risen rapidly in recent years, and the library does not have enough money to continue its work. In the past, it was open every evening and also on Saturdays and Sundays. Now it is closed at those times to save money.
The library is trying every possible way to raise more money to meet its increasing costs. Well-known New York writers and artists are trying to help. So are the universities, whose students use the library, and the governments of Now York City and New York States. But the problem remains serious.

In ancient times the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of
ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor’s degree.
Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act as machines.
One type of test is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer.
Questions 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard. 30. How did students in Middle Ages take a test?
【解析】选[D]。古希腊、罗马学校的学生考试包括saying poetry aloud or giving speeches, 而中世纪欧洲大学生要discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject, 故答案为[D]。

【点睛】[A]中的more candidates than before是对短文中的the great increase population的同义转述。
32. What can we learn from the passage?
It (objective test) is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions, [A]表述错误, 故排除。随后指出客观考试中the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer, 由此可知答案为[C]。[B]和[D]是关于written state examination的内容。
Almost every child is scared of something, from monsters in the cupboard to dogs in the park. But the fact that such fears and phobias are common and normal doesn’t mean they can be taken lightly. Kids experience fears much more strongly than adults. And the influence of the fear can be physical as well as psychological. It can build up so they almost seem scared of everything — a kind of childhood anxiety. Dr. Creswell says, “Your child may always seem to expect the worst to happen and lack confidence in his or her ability to deal with any challenge.” So don’t make the same old mistake of treating them as if they’re silly for being a “scary cat”. Handing the fears is essential.
Children can be born nervous and, if you have such a baby, you’ll tend to prevent them from getting worried. So if they fear dogs, you’ll keep them away from dogs, but in fact that can just confirm to the child that dogs are scary. What is worse, keeping your child away from what they fear can turn that feeling into a phobia. Instead, you should encourage them to get in touch with the thing they fear, in a safe and supportive environment. Dr. Andy Field, a researcher of childhood fears, says, “You shouldn’t force, for example, a dog-anxious child to go up to a dog. But you can approach it yourself, show them there is nothing to be afraid of, stroke it, and talk about the dog being friendly. Once your child dares to stroke a dog — one that’s good with children, of course — then you should encourage them to carry on until they feel calmer, and reward them for being brave.”
Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard. 33. Why are children’s fears usually taken lightly?
But the fact that such fears and phobias are common and normal,

空前的this指代的是greater support from family and friends, their health为所填词的宾语, 故本空应填一第三人称单数形式的动词。
as well as表示其前后是并列关系, 所填词在动名词短语affecting many people之后, 应为一副词, 修饰affecting。
increase depression和affecting many people都是Divorce and loss of a close friend or relative的消极后果。 They are also more likely to wear seat belts in a car and install safety devices in their homes
