Then, in an unthinking moment, he began to study some other diseases. He was surprised to find that he suffered from those diseases as well. After that he decided to read about all the diseases in the book. In the end, he came to the conclusion that he had every disease described in pharmacology except housemaid's knee. Wondering how long he had to live, he tried to examine himself, but he could not feel his heart. Then he thought he was a medical encyclopedia for practice, so he went to see the doctor, one of his close friends. After hearing the narrator's complaints, the doctor wrote out a prescription and handed it to him. The prescription was a diet suggestion: a healthy diet, plenty of exercise and sleep, and no unnecessary worries. Following the instructions of the doctor, he lived a good life.

B. Basic writing techniques: clause connectors.

Clause connectors consist of two groups of conjunctions: coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions.

Coordinating conjunctions:

The five coordinating conjunctions: and, but, yet, or, so (plus two additional ones, for and nor) are used with a comma to join two independent clauses to form a compound sentence.

□ In a matriarchy (母系社会), the mother is the head of the family, and all of the children belong to her clan.

□ The company's sales increased last year, yet its net profit declined.

Yet and but have similar meanings: they both signal that an opposite idea is coming. Yet is preferred when the second clause is an unexpected or surprising contrast to the first clause. When the two clauses are direct opposites, but is preferred. - 22 -

□ Thomas Edison dropped out of school at age 12, yet he became a famous inventor. □ The boy wanted to learn painting, but his parents forced him to learn playing the piano. Subordinating conjunctions:

1. If the dependent clause comes before the independent clause, use a comma after it.

□ Although the manager has agreed to the budget plan, you have to wait for three months to get the money.

2. If the independent clause comes first, do not use a comma.

□ You have to wait for three months to get the money although the manager has agreed to the budget plan. Exercise:

The greatest access into the Japanese market has been by the food industry. In fact, annual per capita (每人) consumption is expected to be about 7 kilos by the mid-1990s. (Moreover), they have acquired a taste for imported beverages, both of the non-alcohol or low alcohol varieties, like beer drinks and \Germany, Switzerland, the United States, and Australia. (Furthermore) , young people, especially women who are aware of the importance of health and fitness, are eating the Western-style breakfasts. (For instance), they enjoy fruit, milk, and cereals (谷类) imported from the United States.

Not only Western countries but also Asian nations and districts (such as) South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand have been benefiting from the changing diet of the Japanese consumer. For example, Japan is importing eels (鳗鱼) from Taiwan of China, asparagus (芦笋) from Thailand, and mangoes (芒果) from the Philippines. (In conclusion), the Japanese trend toward internationalization should become even greater (as) we have entered the twenty-first century. It will certainly increase international trade, which will definitely be advantageous to many countries of the world.
