\chip off a little piece of ice and hold it to your finger.\

After that, I called \help with my geography or with my math. .

When my pet canary died. I told \tried to soothe me. But, I was not consoled. I asked her, \should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?\concern, for she said quietly, \always remember that there are other worlds to sing in.\Somehow I felt better. Another day I was on the telephone , “How do you spell ?grateful?? \

All this took place in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. When I was 9, we moved to Boston.

As I grew into my teens, the memories of those childhood conversations never really left me. I appreciated now how patient, understanding, and kind she was to have spent her time on a little boy.

A few years later, on my way to college, my plane put down in Seattle. I had about h 1. (must have done, speak highly of)alf an hour or so between planes. Without thinking, I dialed my hometown operator and said, \

Miraculously, I heard the small, clear voice I knew so well, \I hadn't planned on this but I heard myself saying, \you please tell me how to spell ?grateful??\

There was a long pause. Then came the soft-spoken answer, \your finger must have healed by now.\

I laughed. \idea how much you meant to me during that time.\

I told her how often I had thought of her over the years and I asked if I could call her again.\

Three months later I was back in Seattle. A different voice answered, \old friend,\

Before I could hang up she said, \a minute. Did you say your name was Paul?\

\Sally left a message for you. She said, ?Tell him I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He'll know what I mean.?\

I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant

Be a Volunteer——Experience of a Volunteer at the Sydney

Olympics

The Sydney Olympics offered me an opportunity to learn more about staging a major multi-sport event and this knowledge, I felt, would stand me in good stead as I developed the media services that would be needed for our Salt Lake City Winter Games in 2002.

I also decided that working as a volunteer would give me a greater understanding of a whole range of issues which is why I joined the ranks of those working in the front line.

But little did I suspect just how much the experience would offer me such powerful feelings and a strong sense of pride - emotions which influence the many memories that I took away with me when I left Sydney.

As a woman volunteer, I am not usually keen on uniforms, but from the moment I put on my Sydney volunteer's uniform I felt I was part of something important, something big that could well be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I immediately bonded with others in the same uniform and as we passed each other in the street dressed in our colorful outfits, we smiled and said \weeks of the Olympics.
