When salesmen are sent to different parts of the city, they have to drive in order to carry their products. Farmers have to drive into the city in order to get what they want.

Sometimes small children must be driven to school. In some cities school buses are used only when children live more than 2,000kin from school. When the children are too young to walk that

long way, their mothers take turns driving them to school. One mother drives on Monday, taking her own children and her neighbor's children as well. Another mother drives on Tuesday, another on Wednesday, and so on. This is called a "car pool". Men also make car pools, with three or four men taking turns driving to the place where they all work. (D) The First Bicycle

Bicycles are very popular over the world now. People ride their bicycles for exercise and they really enjoy kind of sport. In m place, people use a bicycle to get to work. But who made the first bicycle? A Frenchman named Comte de Sivrac made and owned the first bicycle. Mr. Sivrac rode the bicycle in Paris. The handles for the hands and the seats looked like a horse and were wooden (木制的). And the front wheel is much larger than the other one. This bicycle was very difficult to move. A rider had to pick up the front wheel to change direction (方向). (A bicycle moves on two wheels, a car on four.) Finally, it had no brakes to stop it or pedals for the feet.

In 1817, a German named Baron won Drais de Sauerbrun made the first bicycle better. The seat was more comfortable. The wheel could change direction. His ride in the street took only one hour instead of three hours on foot!

Sauerbrun brought this kind of bicycle from Germany to France. Then, Denis Johnson, an Englishman, made a bicycle for women. It had room for their dresses to hang down. But these bicycles still had no brakes or pedals, and people often got hurt. These bicycles and the people who rode them were not popular.

It took another forty 4 five years for the bicycle to become popular again. About 100 years later, bicycle riding is even more popular than ever. There are bicycles in India and China, and China is even called "a country on bicycles". In fact, there are more bicycles than cars in China today!
