Passage 1
Americans are beginning to realize what Eastern cultures have known for thousands of years: Tea is good for what ails (使受病痛) you. But the ancients could not have imagined all the possible benefits from the leaves of Camellia sinensis – a white-flower evergreen from which black, green, and oolong teas are derived.
A growing body of evidence suggests that fresh-brewed teas can do far more than soothe a sore throat or provide “vigor of body, contentment of mind, and determination of purpose”, as Chinese Emperor Shen Nung reputedly said in 2737 B.C. Many studies suggest that tea may help fight heart disease and cancers as well as increase bone density.
The rest of the world drinks more tea than any other beverage besides water, but the typical American is a virtual tea teetotaler (禁酒者). Americans drink about 8 gallons of tea per person per year, usually chilled or over ice. That’s a drop in the bucket compared with their consumptions of coffee – 26 gallons per person per year.
Joe Simrany, president of Tea Council of the U.S.A., an industry trade group, cites the American perception that tea is something you drink to get over a cold, not a beverage to be savored, like wine. Nor is it as ubiquitous (无处不在的) as coffee. \There is not Starbucks of tea.” Simrany points out.
But the tide may be turning. The Starbucks of coffee does sell tea, and there are about 1 000 tea bars in the U.S., Simrany says. Increased availability of bottled and gourmet tea has helped double annual tea sales since 1990, to nearly $5 billion.
We focus on green tea. Almost unheard of a decade ago outside Asian-American communities, green tea has generated more buzz than other types and has migrated from health-food stores to supermarkets. It ranks third in U.S. sales, after black and herbal teas. (Herbal “teas” such as chamomile don’t come from Camellia sinensis, but rather are the infusion of the leaves, roots, bark, seeds, fruit, or flowers of other plants. Tea’s health benefits may not apply to them.)
56 According to the passage, tea _________.

b. can only be used to relieve a sore throat d. is not a beverage to be savored
57 A typical American __________.

Passage 2
There is no doubt that today English is one of the most important and richest of the world’s languages. Probably the most significant factor accounting for the latter quality was the Conquest of England by the Normans more than 900 years ago. The conquering Normans spoke French. Most of the inhabitants of the conquered nation spoke varieties of Anglo-Saxon of Germanic origin.
Of course, the Normans were stronger than the local inhabitants politically and naturally their language became the language of the King’s court. It also became the language for written documents, together with Latin, and was generally regarded as “more literary” and somehow “better” than the language of the common people. In spite of apparently being “worse”, however, the language of the ordinary inhabitants of England, and especially the language spoken by the inhabitants of the central part of the country, did not die out. For centuries, the two languages continued to exist side by side.
The individual most responsible for bringing them together (and one of the greatest writer in English literature) was a customs officer who lived in the late fourteen century named Geoffrey Chaucer, whose Canterbury Tales is one of the most extraordinary works in English, practically created, or at least made acceptable, a new language, which was a combination of the more elegant French and the cruder but more powerful Germanic elements.
Since Chaucer’s time the two languages have been woven closer and closer together, forming the single language that we now know as English. However, even today, vestiges(痕迹) of the differences survive, for words of French or Latin origins still tend to occur more frequently in formal written English than in spoken English. This naturally means that, for Spanish speakers, it is often easier to understand written English than spoken English. You can find evidence of this in this paragraph. Go through it and underline the words, which are similar to words in Spanish. It is virtually certain that these will be words of Latin (or Greek) or French derivation, and probably

The local people liked the Norman language better. b. The Normans were politically stronger than the local people. c. The Normans didn't know the language of the common people. d. The King didn't want to learn a new language. a. The common people could read it.
b. It formally separated the two languages used at that time.
c. It combined elegant French with more powerful Germanic elements. d. All of the above.
a. They have become harder to learn.
b. They have become together to form the single language of English. c. They have died out.
d. They have separated, with people speaking either one or the other. a. formal written English b. spoken English
c. spoken French d. formal written Latin
62 Why did the Normans' language dominate at the court and in documents?
63 What was unique about the language of Canterbury Tales?
64 What has happened to the French and the Germanic languages since Chaucer's time?
65 Words of French or Latin origin tend to occur more frequently in ____________.

Passage 4
Eight years after his death, prolific science-fiction author Issac Asimov has suddenly arrived as a hot Hollywood commodity, with screen deals for his novels and short stories landing all over town.
11
A deal closed late last week at Warner Bros to adapt the Asimov short story “The Ugly Little Boy” into a film. The picture will be produced by Denise DiNovi and Demi Moore as a starring vehicle for Moore.
In other recent deals, Fox has optioned Asimov’s most popular novel series, “Foundation,” for Shekhar Kapur (“Elizabeth”) to direct; Paramount is working on turning “End of Eternity” into a film that Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”) will likely direct from a script by “Total Recall” co-writer Gary Goldman; and Sony Pictures Family Entertainment is developing into an animated file series “Norby, the Mixed Up Robot,” a series of 10 children’s novels that Asimov wrote with his wife Janet, who’ll act as creative consultant.
Most of the deals will be worth seven-figure paydays if the films get made.
Asimov wrote more than 460 works in either book or short-story form. While he wrote some nonfiction and mysteries, his specialty was sci-fi, with futuristic stories that were alien-free and high on pro-humanistic themes.
His work has influenced many prominent sci-fi filmmakers, but Asimov action had been sparse. The most recent adaptation was the Robin Williams picture “Bicentennial Man.” Part of the reason was that Asimov’s sole passion was books and his family. He was hardly pushy(有进取心的) about getting his works adapted, known to grant film options for as little as $50.
The catalyst for the surge in screen activity is that Asimov’s estate is now represented by Created By, a partnership created 1-1/2 years ago by Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza, who currently handle the screen rights of about 200 major sci-fi, fantasy and horror authors. 71 What is the article mainly about?
a. Asimov and his works.
c. Asimov and American show business.
b. Asimov and Hollywood filmmakers. d. The popularity of Asimov's works.
72 Paragraph 3 mainly talks about ___________.
a. the agreements between Asimov's wife and the Hollywood producers b. the films that will be shot on Asimov's works c. the producers that will shoot the films d. the works that will be adapted into films a. science fiction
