Do you want to improve the way you study? Do you feel nervous before a test? Many students say that a lack(缺少) of concentration (注意力) is their biggest problem. It seriously affects their ability to study, so do their test results.

If so, use these tips to help you. Study Techniques

? You should always study in the same place. You shouldn‘t sit in a position that you use for another purpose. For example, when you sit on a sofa to study, your brain will think it is time to relax. Don‘t watch TV while you are studying. Experts warn that your concentration may be reduced by 50 percent if you attempt(尝试) to study in this way. Always try to have a white wall in front of you, so there is nothing to distract (make less concentrated) you. Before sitting down to study, gather together all the equipment you need. Besides your textbooks, pens, pencils and knives, make sure you have a dictionary. If your study desk or table is needed when you are not studying, store all your equipment in a box beside it.

? Your eyes will become tired if you try to read a text which is on a flat surface. Put your book at an angle (角度)of 30 degrees.

? Be realistic and don‘t try to complete too much in one study period. Finish one thing before beginning another. If you need a break, get up and walk around for a few minutes, but try not to telephone a friend or have something to eat.

Test-taking Skills ? All your hard work will be for nothing if you are too nervous to take your test. Getting plenty of rest is very important. This means not studying all night before your test! It is a better idea to have a long-term study plan. Try to make a timetable for your study which lasts for a few months. ? Exercise is a great way to reduce pressure. Doing some form of exercise every day will also improve your concentration. Eat healthy food too.

? When you arrive in the examination room, find your seat and sit down. Breathe slowly and deeply. Check the time on the clock during the test, but not too often. Above all, take no notice of everyone else and give the test paper your undivided attention. 65.What is students‘ biggest problem?

For 13 years, his name was on the top of the list of the world‘s richest men. He is said to make $1 million an hour. But for Bill Gates, the founder of the world‘s biggest software company, Microsoft, money is just a tool.

In 2008, Gates said he would give all his money to help those in need. Since then, he has spent most of his time with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. It‘s the world‘s biggest charity

1

foundation (慈善基金会) under him and his wife.

But Gates was not born to help the poor. He didn‘t reply the letters asking for help. But in 1993, after a trip to Africa, he understood how much others needed his help. Then he changed his lifestyle. ―We knew that we were just holders of the money. Our money would go back to society,‖ said Gates.

His idea is shared with his best friend, Warren Buffett, the richest man in the world in 2008. ―Money is just like ?claim checks‘ (取货单) on society that I should give back,‖ said Buffett.

Buffett, 79 years old now, says he still loves Coca-Cola and burgers, wears old clothes and lives in the same house he bought 50 years ago. However, Buffett has decided to give 85 percent of his money to Gates' charity programs.

―Bill Gates has set an example to people like you and me,‖ said Leonard Pitts, a US writer. ―He has me thinking about things I can do to change my corner of the world.‖ 65. Was Bill Gates the richest man in the world for 13 years?

Looking you in the eye Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The programme works because everyone‘s eyes are different. So in the future you won‘t have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You‘ll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.

The eye-recognition(眼睛识别) programme is already being tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain and Italy. Soon, this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.

However scientists are working on other systems(系统). Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We already have machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark(痕迹) made by your finger(手指).

Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don‘t change as you get older, or get dirty like hands or fingers. And even twins have different eyes. So the programme can be up to

2

94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. Some programmes may only be right 51% of the time. In Britain, it was found that 91% of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.

In the future your computer will be looking you in the eye. So smile! 65. Does the programme work because everyone‘s eyes are different? _________________________________________________________ 66. Where is the eye-recognition programme already being tested, in shops or in hospitals?

Maybe you are more interested in sports than in history. You probably think you will never be a top student. In fact, anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. If you can use your time well, you may improve your study without much work. Here‘s how:

Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week time, you should make a 1ist of things that you have to do. First write down the time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide on a good time for studying. Of course, studying shouldn‘t take all of your time. Don‘t forget to leave yourself enough time for hobbies.

Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study place. Keep this space, which may be a desk or just a corner of your room. No games, radio, or television! When you sit down to work, think only about the subject!

Make good use of your time in class. Listen carefully to what the teacher says. Careful

listening in class means less work later. You also need to take notes in class, because it can make it easier for you to learn well.

There are only a few ways mentioned here to help you with your studying. I believe you can find many other ways besides these.(221)

When he was a teenager, Hunter Adams was very unhappy, and he spent many years in the 1960s and 1970s in a special hospital for people with mental health problems.

When he left hospital, Adams decided to become a doctor, so he went to a medical school in Virginia, in America. But when he was there, he did things in

4

different ways. For example, he didn‘t like the doctors‘ white coats, so he wore shirts with flowers on them when he visited his patients, and he tried to make them laugh. The doctors at the medical school didn‘t like Adams very much because he was too different.

Adams believed that people in hospital need more than just medicine. He saw unhappy and lonely people, and he tried to help them, not just as patients, but as people too. He spent a lot of time with children in hospital, and often put a special red nose on his face so he looked like a clown and made the children laugh.

When he finished medical school and became a doctor, Adams opened his own hospital, called The Gesundheit Institute, with some other doctors. They wanted it to be a place with a different way of working with sick people.

Hunter Adams became famous during the 1980s, and in 1998, Universal Pictures made a film about his life. It was very successful. In the film, Robin Williams played Adams. Reading is a very important skill. Reading is also an excellent way to improve your English. However, to make sure what you read isn‘t too difficult, it‘s important to know what makes passages difficult and how you can improve your understanding of them. Here are some suggestions:

Firstly, the way you read something depends very much on your purpose(目的) for reading it. The kind of reading you do in class or for your homework is different from how you read a novel(小说) for pleasure in the summer holidays.

Next, find something out about the topic(主题) you are going to read. The more background

6

information you have, the easier it‘ll be to understand the text. You can get this background information in your own language.

Then, of course, reading itself is an excellent way to improve your vocabulary(词汇量), but there are many other things you can do. The more vocabulary you have, the easier your reading will be.

And finally, a common mistake(错误) is to read everything very slowly and carefully, looking up each unknown word. Sometimes this is necessary. However, it takes a long time and can be very boring, it can even make understanding more difficult! Using your dictionary correctly(正确地) is important.

If you‘ve followed the above advice and still can‘t understand a text, then it‘s simply too hard for you. Stop reading and ask someone to help you. Nobody likes to give up, but you‘ll just be wasting your time if you continue to work at a text that‘s too difficult for you. 15. Is reading important for you?

Every child in Great Britain will receive a full-time education until the age of sixteen. If a child fails to enter school, a government official will visit his or her home to find out why. If there is not a good reason, their parents may be punished. Parents have some choice about what schools their children go to. Most parents send their children to state school, where tuition(学费) and

9

textbooks are free. The opposite of state schools is public schools, where tuition is required.

The school year begins in September and it has three terms. There are three main holidays. These holidays take place at Christmas. The summer holiday is the longest and usually lasts from the middle of July to the beginning of September.

Education is divided into two main stages – primary school and secondary school. Primary schools are for students from the age of five to eleven. Core(核心) subjects that are taught are Maths, English, History, Geography, Science, Art, Music and Physical Education. Secondary schools are for students from the age of eleven to sixteen or eighteen. The same core subjects are taught as well as other subjects such as Economics, Technology and Computer Studies. Three important public exams are taken at the ages of eleven, sixteen and eighteen. After the age of sixteen, students can either find a job or go on with Higher Education.
