翻译的标准与境界——公共场所英语标示纠错有感（之二） 来源： 中国翻译协会 引言
本篇并非理论文章，而是游记和杂谈，当然，还是围绕英语标示问题说事。
一年前，我就计划今年五一前去上海探亲并游览长三角地区；一个月前，拙文“不止是英语问题—公共场所英语标示纠错有感”完稿后，自己觉得还有些“剩勇”和“余兴”，于是灵机一动：何不来个一石二鸟、公私兼顾，将探亲旅游与学习考察、语言实习揉在一起？自己学习英语、从事翻译及语言教学几十年了，运用“角色扮演”和“以活动为基础, 以任务为中心”等教学法还算轻车熟路。就这样，我成了“二自”（自封、自费）的“巡视员”和带“金”（退休金）的“太学生”（我辈因文革等原因曾在北外度过了八年多时间，其中大部是“蹉跎岁月”，同学间常以“太学生”自娱自乐）。
一、 士气大振的热身行
计出行随。动身前，先在京挑外语水平较高的海淀区热热身吧。4月10日晨，入颐和园南门穿西堤出北门再钻进地铁4号线车厢内，真是大有斩获！一眼就瞅见了“老幼病残孕专座”的全新译文：SEAT FOR PASSENGER IN NEED，这不是与我年初在墨尔本城铁里见到的“SEAT FOR SPECIAL-NEEDS”如出一辙吗？后来在赴沪的列车上听一专业人士讲，4号线比较独特，有香港的地铁公司参与合作管理，难怪同一内容项目的英语标示，它都与北京其它的公交车上的大不一样。
原文的问题暂且不论。先思考为什么港方能拿出语言地道且更重要的是符合事实的英语标示，而京方拿出的是虽语言地道但只是形式上翻译得“准确忠实”而在实际上则华而不实的英语标示? 这事太复杂，涉及到翻译的标准与境界等重大问题。简言之，译者能否在翻译中除在语言技术上非得把关，如在翻译中发现、修改原文的错别字，校正病句，理清语言乱麻等等之外，还能不能在翻译中做事实方面的澄清和把关，甚至对所涉及的原则问题也做出更正或澄清？本人实在没有水平探讨此等“深层次”问题，也无力回答这类“偏题”、“怪题”，还是留待有关部门和学术单位的教授、专家们去研究吧。不过我有亲身经历过的四个实例，现列举如下，权当提供点资料：
第一件事，30多年前，我在一西方国家驻华使馆工作，曾随同该国一州长及驻华大使率领的友好团去四川访问，当时四川的党政一把手在代表团抵达蓉城的当晚就在金牛坝宾馆会见该团，谈话伊始先寒暄，领导人问大使“夫人来了吗？”我为该大使已服务两年了，知道他丧偶多年且未再娶，于是领导人话音刚落，就压低嗓门插了一句：“夫人已过世。”领导人反应敏锐、亲切自然，马上转入谈话正题。这场活动很顺利、很成功，尤其是当代表团（包括随行的一些大跨国公司的代表）后来得知这位领导人是在当晚即将晋京就任我国第三任总理的背景下挤出时间来予以接见时简直是一片欢腾。我想，当时自己若是作了“忠实”的翻译那可就让双方都有点尴尬了，那我就不单是“缺心少肺”，而是“脏心烂肺”了。但话说回来，当时作翻译的若不是我这样外交人员服务局的“中秘”而是任何部委的高翻，那人家都只能是照翻，即便尴尬点也无可指责。
第二件事，有一次随公使衔参赞去一外事服务部门谈事情，接待的是一位四、五十岁的大姐，
官不大，正处，却像“马列主义老太太”。话都快谈完了，她还要加点“理想与情操”，称“我的理想是在中国实现共产主义。”我打心眼里烦她，心想我念高三政治课就知道列宁在俄国率先搞成社会主义是对马克思主义的发展，但共产主义哪能只在中国实现，那叫“世界大同”吗？再说这是你学马列的语境吗？我虽英语脱口而出，但偏偏把状语给她“屏蔽”了。不料她略懂英语，马上“命令”我补充“在中国！”我考虑使馆方是有事求我方办，又不忍心毁掉双方的良好气氛，而且确信该大姐也是一片好心，既要宣传马列，又不能让人家误解我们是要输出革命，于是只好唯心地加上“IN CHINA”才算交差。
第三件事，前年我在局属翻译公司审校一份稿件，我和一翻都发现原稿中的阿拉伯数字还有的外币的换算搞错了。怎么办? 当然不能不负责任地以错就错，但又不能背着主人擅自改动，于是给有关使馆一个电话再加个电邮就通气了，结果是两全齐美、皆大欢喜。
第四件事，前些年给一电视台“扒带子”，翻译他们在挪威采访一海边岩画（联合国世界文化遗产保护地）的录像带，中间有一、两句，怎么也听不出意思来，原来采访中间突起大风，惊涛拍岸，背景声太大。我只好找栏目编导，提出第一方案，上策，是“实话实说”，用括弧、标字幕说明，观众一看就能谅解；第二方案，下策，是“编词圆场”，根据上下文，攒两句合乎逻辑的废话，台词与挪威的现场解说口型大致对上就行。编导欣赏第二方案，我也照办了，但心里一直打鼓，因为内行一看就会纳闷：你哪有那么大的本事？我这算是“糊弄观众”呢还是在说“善意的谎言”？我至今也没搞清楚。
二、 刚上马，就遇到“下马威”
4月15日晚，登上了T109列车赴沪。现在条件好了，即使业已沦落成“弱势”的老特快也改成全封闭式的空调车，但我一上去就见识了一句极其憋足的英文。大车窗上方有标示：请勿伸出窗外，英文是“DO NOT EXTEND ANY PARTS OF YOUR”（由沪返京的T110也是这个样，都是北京局的。不知上海局发的沪京间T字头车是何英文，更不知其他铁路局的老特快、老直快是啥样）。此句诸错俱全，我先问“窗外”跑到哪里去了？缺了它说EXTEND，那么旅客连STRETCH BREAK都违规了？我还真看到一个中年白领在这窗边过道里做“伸展运动”。再说谓语动词，“STICK OUT”不比EXTEND好吗？其三，PARTS可是复数，京局是否容许我们单臂或一个指头伸出窗外？其四，介词OF后的YOUR可不是名词，而是形容词型的物主代词，这按英语语法算是“死定了！”你要么加个名词BODY，要么加个S，把YOUR弄成个“所有格”，弄成名词型的物主代词也好哦！再看，大窗左侧，有把“安全锤”，英文标示倒没毛病“SAFETY HAMMER”, 只是活生生地展示了当代的“以子之矛，攻子之盾”，因为京局在文字上告诫我们勿伸出窗外的同时，还是非常体贴地在物质上给我们在万一的情况下伸出窗外提供了最必要的条件。简而言之，语言混乱的背后往往是逻辑的混乱和管理的不善。
三、 千里南行，沪上取经
1. 第一次震撼——“请??让个座”
我这趟实地学习考察的重点是看看上海如何处理“老幼病残孕专座”的中英文标示。一到大上海，就感觉他们不同凡响，连中英文标示都是“大手笔”、“大心量”。与北京不同，上海的公交汽车上没英语标示，但他们有红十字标志，也有国际通用的人形图标。中文用词也不
尽相同，他们喜欢用“老弱病残孕怀抱婴儿者，”最醒目之处是他们在那三把黄色座椅的上方装有大牌子，上有大号字：“请给需要帮助的人让个座谢谢。”
2. 第二次震撼——“爱心专座”
坐2号线地铁，看到了耳目一新的标示“爱心专座”，其英文标示就是北京的那位教授介绍过的“COURTESY SEAT”，我当时就心中为之一振。我不是没琢磨过国外同类用词“COURTESY SEAT”的汉译，不仅查过陆谷孙等老师的《新英汉词典》和《英汉大词典》，还查了梁实秋先生主编的《远东英汉大》，按这些字典，都应是“优待座”。“礼让座”、“优先座”和“备用座”只是个人按词典的精神实质弄出的“变奏”。但怎么就没想到“爱心”这词？（我反省自己除业务水平，即翻译标准方面与此佳作有差距外，在翻译的境界上也存在差距。）多地道和优美的译文啊！真是一下子就说到点子上了，COURTESY在这里是“优待”和“恩惠”，这不都是出于爱心吗？这不是什么“直译”或“意译”，而是“通译”，即“融会贯通”也！我认为, 此译不仅有高标准，而且有高境界，只可惜仍带有“专”的尾巴。请把我最烦的这“专”字去了，它对我来说已是“芒刺在背”，更如“骨鲠在喉”。其实，就说“爱心座”，岂不完美? 但瑕不掩玉，上海高翻值得自己好好学。
我现在不仅更相信“语言是载体和工具”这句话，而且要补充一句“语言也是反映和写照”。2号线横穿大上海，一头连浦东国际机场，一头连浦西的虹桥交通枢纽，中间与多条地铁线相连。试问：缺爱心，甚至爱心尚不够的人能设计出如此杰作吗？
其实，“爱心”这东西岂只是在中国受到格外的关注。我在墨尔本小住时学习英文“垃圾邮件”还得到一件“宝贝”，那是政客们竞选议员时精心挑选的广告词（据说原本是人们用来衡量医生的），语言地道、意境深邃，其核心也是“爱心至上、道德为先”。我曾推荐给好几位高翻朋友，现不妨抄录如下：They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. 句中无一难词，但因care 和know分别两次出现，而且都是一语双关，很难翻好，我只能译个大意：“选民（病人）最在乎的是你在乎不在乎他们，其次才是你有多大的能力（多高的技术）。”提倡“爱心”和讲求“德才兼备”应是世界通行，中国在这些方面，绝不应落后。二军医大吴孟超大夫90岁了，每年都做那么多台手术，捐出那么多的钱。他说：医者，德为先！我也想套用此句型说“译者，德为先！”(真“寸”，这两句写成拼音字母，若不注“医”、“译”的四声，那就完全一样)。岂止医、译两界，“百业德为先”哟！
3. 第三次震撼——“残障者优先”
逛南京路步行街时去趟“世纪广场”厕所，没想遇到个“超级震撼”。厕所台阶式的正门两侧，都是带不锈钢大扶手的宽宽的坡道，一看就是“无障碍”，但人家用不着这么标示，更用不着弄什么“专用道”之类的劳什子，这里的中英文标示仅是“残障者优先Priority for Disabled Person”。精当啊，绝妙啊！我条件反射似地想起了北京公交车上的“专座”一词，若早日用上海的这“优先”来取代它；用“priority for”来取代“reserved for”多好！学学上海吧，人家用词天衣无缝、无懈可击！你看这“世纪广场”处在南京东路腹心地带，它连接南京、九江、湖北、福建四条路，人们从四方入厕，而且绝大部分属非残障者。当然，有残障者时，让其“优先”；没残障者时，大家“各取所需”，可分别从正面台阶道和南北两侧的无障碍坡道出入，“各不相碍”。什么叫“既突出重点又照顾各方”？什么叫“统揽全局、综合平衡”？什么叫“善于弹钢琴”？这不都有了吗! 我一边掏出小本记，一边对老伴慷慨
陈词。
这就惊动了一穿蓝制服的“管理”。怕误会，我主动上前介绍自己是北京来的退休志愿者，正在考察学习上海的中英文公共标示。我刚赞叹了两句，管理员就打断我了：“这标示还可以改进，比如变变字体或颜色，加个箭头，就更清楚了。”我感动之余，猛一个激灵：“可别动不动就北京什么的，洋气的上海人都不把我这充其量只是大半个北京人的武汉佬当乡下人了，我更不应拿自己当中央！” 正警醒自己之际，出现了更令我感动的一幕，我何德何能，竟能得到如此礼遇：这时管理员正式邀请我实际操作，让我搞全新的“角色扮演”——从南侧的坡道过来，他们好演示如何接待“残障者”。我当然乐于从命，于是按管理员指示，到了坡道尽头，一按白色大门旁的门铃，大门顿开，还有一穿白制服的工作人员赶紧过来迎接。只听得管理员用上海话咕噜了几句，“白制服”笑了，我也乐了。既有好政策，就把它用足吧。我向这些可亲可敬的上海人道了声再见，就顺着这南坡道抄近道奔九江路，到三百米开外的“人民大舞台”买上芭的“白毛女”去了。
4. 第四次震撼 —— 公厕“挂牌服务”，且有英语标示
周末旁晚，去“新天地”感受了一把。只见酒吧、餐馆宾客盈门，“石库门”建筑别具一格。最没想到的是在“新天地”的厕所里竟遇到了北京的三甲医院且得是专家才有资格提供的“挂牌服务”，而且有英语标示。告示牌上方写着：“今天为您服务的是XXX — The Janitor Serving You Today is XXX”；下方是：“如对清洁服务有何意见，敬请致电XXX。For Any Feedback on Housekeeping Service Please Call XXX.”好奇心重的我问了问在一旁站立的穿有整洁制服的中年女工，是否名叫XXX。她答“是”，并请我“提宝贵意见”。我不知道这世界上还有没有别的地方也把厕所管理员兼清洁工的大名如此宣扬的，而且连英文都透着地道。我在北京的少数餐馆见过菜盘边上贴有“张厨师”、“赵师傅”等，只标姓氏，不标全名。上海的管理果然名不虚传，由此可见一斑。这也是一种“以人为本”，设想我是这管理员，很可能是外来民工，既能打工挣钱，又能在“十里洋场”“芳名远扬”，我能不卖劲吗？不过，天底下从没有免费的午餐，这牌牌也犹如唐僧套在孙悟空头上的“紧箍咒”。上海人，“门槛精”得很！（我问过上海人，这词可褒可贬，我在此处只取其褒。）
5. 第五次震撼——“上博”馆内，处处精品
十多年前，在华盛顿驻美使馆听过徐匡迪市长作报告，那时我就知道了上海博物馆很值得一看，这次是亲身见证了精品“上博”。建筑设计、展品陈列不用说，就连这英文解说和标示之精美都叫人敬意油然而生。“海纳百川”的上海，“大气”并不亚于北京，“上博”除免费参观外，还免费提供中、英、日文的介绍资料。除总体介绍外，我还拿了十一个陈列厅的中英文简介，涉及青铜、陶瓷、雕塑、国画、钱币、古家具、玉器和书法等，叫你学中文、学英文、学历史、学文化，学不完啰。英文词都那么精美、考究，连扶梯上的标示“小心碰头 Watch the Escalator over Your Head”都令那些劣质的CHINGLISH立马现出原形。临出发前，我们单位的一青年高翻向我“举报”，她在一人工河边见到“小心落水”竟翻译成“Fall into the water carefully”，这岂不是让人投河，只是小心点而已！我在苏州的北塔寺（报恩寺）内爬九层楼梯时见到了“小心碰头”标为“Look out Knock head”，这不是要我们把头往楼梯口上碰吧？ 该寺庙内的公厕还有“小心地滑 － Be Careful of Landslide”，不得了，这是有人“妖言惑众”（我仅从文字上“就事论事”，请不要去逮译者，但译者一定要吸取教训），说报恩寺里有“山体滑坡”！
四、 让美丽的大上海更美丽，愿精明的上海人更智慧
1. 第一次震惊——中国馆内竟把英文国名中的C小写了!
4月18日上午，来到向往已久的世博园中国馆，见到了那神奇的“清明上河图”。虽在匆忙间，但仍可领略到馆内精彩的中英文解说及标示词，只叹自己眼睛和大脑都不够使。但万分遗憾的是，在馆内的展厅外短暂候场时，猛一抬头，就看见了欢迎观众来中国馆的电子显示屏将英文国名中的C字母小写了，颜色是绿的，我下意识地看手表，时针指向11时整，有关方可调出监控录像查查是怎么回事！我不禁嚷嚷起来：国名词首C怎可小写！旁边有接下茬的：C小写不是“瓷器”吗？几天后，我参观青浦的古镇朱家角，见有一中国瓷器展销厅，厅门上方的英文标示很值得玩味：China—china，人家就理得清，还玩上了文字游戏（Play of Words）。
进馆前，曾在外面的蛇形防护栏内排长队，临近入馆前，我突然发现右边隔着三十米开外的防护栏栏口处头顶上方电子显示屏上的英语标示（中英文均竖排列）也有错，其中文是“XX介绍”，英文是“Introduction of XXX”。看来，这介词错已成我国英译界的“多发病”和“流行病”了。这次南行，就见杭州在这方面最讲究，西湖各处景点“介绍”，不是用Introduction to就是Profile of 。但苏州、无锡、乌镇、普陀山等地把介词TO与OF用混的例子比比皆是，好几处国家重点文物保护单位都不能幸免，连乌镇茅公（沈雁冰先生）儿时就读的小学也不例外！
2. 第二次震惊——老城隍庙前的英文简介令“人神共愤”！
老城隍庙地区（现正式名叫“豫园”）是个旅游和文化胜地，我来到城隍庙前，本想买门票进去看看，但在大门外就改变主意了，原来是其英文简介让我“是可忍孰不可忍”！—Shanghai City God Temple was built in ?haveelapsed (注：原文如此) since the 600 year history. 再看原文，才知道它想说的是：“上海城隍庙始建于XX年，至今已有600年历史。”这是什么英文？简直“无法无天”！老实说，我们当年在北外一下读《北京周报》、《中国建设》等课外读物就掌握了“600 years have elapsed (或passed) since the establishment of Shanghai City God Temple ”这类的句型, 真不知译者是何资质！可能是有更多的原本像我这样的潜在游客都不屑得一顾吧，里面香火不旺，就稀稀拉拉两三人。这么下去庙里的神也该责怪译者误大事了。于是我扭头去了旁边的“豫园”，尽管门票一人多了30，我们还是不后悔。“豫园”不仅建筑和园林都精美，里面的英文标示也是上乘。一队队外国游客进进出出，青年导游们或英音，或美音，解说都准确流畅，上海不乏外语人才！我还“蹭听”了几段，如庭院过道有一处“发愿碎石拼图”，中英文标示都没有。若没听到导游的，自己肯定会漏景点。
3. 第三次震惊——南京路上的英语第三人称单数动词竟不加S！
南京路步行街上就一家店铺有胆量在其临街外墙上明文标出“本店提供英语服务—This Store Offer English Service”。这是一家体育用品店，在南京东路512号，位于“老凤祥银楼”东侧，离和平饭店不远。其勇气固然可嘉，“资本”却似不足，严谨就更谈不上！我不知这白底红字的醒目大牌牌挂了多久，而且还要持续多长。请赶紧在这第三人称单数动词OFFER后加个小S吧！可“低碳纠错”，不用换牌牌冤枉花钱，就用防水颜色笔，在动词后加。 我
