备注 day comes to be aware of the language I use with my mother.. Part II (para.4-6) Describes my mother?s actual command of English and how I feel about her “limited English” during my growing-up. Part III (para.7-10) Focuses on an incident in which my mother asks me to pretend for her. This account shows vividly how much difficulty my mother has had because of her limited language skill. Ⅴ. Language points 1. I cannot give you much more than personal opinions on the English lanaguge and its variations in this country or others. (para.1) (much) more than: used when comparing two different amounts, numbers 教 学 进 程 与 设 计 etc.to introduce the second amount or number 比。。。多(用于数量等的比较) e.g. Most of the men are not much more than four feet tall. 其中大多数的男人身高不足四尺。 However, leadership is much more than courage and daring. 然而,领导不只是勇气及胆识而已。 2. And by that definition, I am someone who has always loved language.(para 2) By definition: if something has a particular quality by definition, it must have that quality because all things of that type have it. 按照定义地;当然地;明显地 e.g. Adolescents, by definition, are still maturing.根据定义来说,青春期少年 仍未成熟。 3. …. The way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth.(para 2) Here, four phrases introduced by “evoke” create a structure of parallelism. In grammar, parallelism is a balance of two or more similar words, phrases, or clauses. The application of parallelism in sentence construction improves writing style and readability. Parallelism is also one of the most useful and flexible rhetorical devices. It refers to any structure which brings together parallel elements, be these nouns, 9

备注 adjectives, verbs, adverbs, or larger structures. Done well, parallelism imparts grace and power to a passage. e.g. she reads the Forbes report, listens to Wall Street week, converses daily with her stock broker, reads all of Shirley Maclaine?s books with ease….(para 4) The fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they didn?t hear her.(para 6) 4. language is the tool of my trade.(para 2) the tool of my trade= the things I need to do my job tool: 1) sth that you hold in your hand and use to do a particular job 工具 ,用具 教 学 进 程 与 设 计 e.g. I have a complete set of carpenter?s tools. 我有全套的木工工具。 Translation 国王只是军政府的一个傀儡。 The king was just the tool of the military government. 2)a piece of equipment or askill that is useful for doing your job (有助于做工或完成某事的)用具,手段,方法 e.g. Television is an important tool for the modern teacher. 对于现代的教师来说,电视是一种重要的工具。 Translation 诗人是工匠,文字是他这一行的工具。 The poet is a craftsman and words are the tools of his trade. 5. And I use them all---all the Englishes I grew up with.(para 2) Englishes means “the English language and its varations in this country or others” Grew up with : 与….一起成长 e.g. grow up with tears 泪水伴着成长 In addition, most of us grow up with people of similar social circumstances. 另外,我们大部分人与相同社会背景的人一起长大。 6. That was the language that helped shape the way I saw things, expressed things, made sense of the world. 10

Could you help me (to) finish this before you leave? make (some )sense of something: to understand something ,esp. difficult or complicated 了解某事的意义,理解(尤指困难或复杂的)事物 e.g. can you make sense of what I said? 你能领会我说的意思吗? The attempt of human beings to make sense out of the sensation they experience is called perception. 人们试图从他们亲身感受中领悟道理,这就叫洞察力。 3)make sense 教 学 进 程 与 设 计 a) to have a clear meaning and be easy to understand 有(明确而容易理解的)意义 e.g. Read this and tell me if it makes sense. 读读这篇东西,告诉我它是否能读得通。 b) to be a sensible thing to do 是明智做法 it makes sense (for somebody ) to do something It makes sense to save money while you can.能省钱时就省钱,这是明智的。 c) if something makes sense , there seems to be a good reason or explanation for it.; Why did she do a thing like that ?It doesn?t seem to make sense. 这真是无法解释---她为什么会做出这样的事情? My mother has long realized the limitations of her English as well.(para. 7) Long is an adverb here, refers to for a long time, and can be put in the end of the sentence: my mother has realized the limitations of her English long as well. e.g. Have you been working here long ?你在这工作很久了吗? 8. She had cashed out her small portfolio…(para. 7) Cash out: means exchange something for cash 把某物兑换成现金(支票,票据) e.g. Can you cash these traveler?s cheques for me ? 11
