What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work.. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can

improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic(认错的) about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work. 31.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The importance of working hard at school. B.Choosing a career according to one’s strengths. C.How to face one’s weakness. D.The value of school work.

B. one of the best ways of earning extra money C. of great use for his work in the future

33. From the passage we learn that if a student’s school performance is not good, he ______. A.should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities B.will be regretful about his bad results C.may also do well in his future work D.should restart his study in school
34. The underlined phrase “be all thumbs” (in para. 3) probably means “_______”. A. be clumsy at doing things B. be skillful in doing things
C. be not interested in certain things D. be easily bored in doing things
35. From the last paragraph we know one should _________. A.make full use of one’s own weak points B.study harder for a new school record C.apologize for one’s own school record D.face one’s own weak points bravely

French surgeons have performed what they said on Wednesday was the world's first partial face transplant(移植) giving a new nose, chin and lips to a woman attacked by a dog. Specialists from two French hospitals carried out the operation on a 38-year- old woman on Sunday in the northern city of Amiens by taking the face from a brain-dead woman, who had hanged herself just hours before the operation. Her family agreed on the operation.
\brief statement after waiting three days to announce the pioneering surgery.

was unable to talk or chew properly. Such injuries are \repair using normal surgical techniques, the statement said.
The statement did not say what the woman would look like when she had fully recovered, but medical experts said she was unlikely to resemble the woman who had been the source of her new face.
The operation was led by Jean-Michel Dubernard, a specialist from a hospital in Lyon who has also carried out hand transplants.
Skin transplants have long been used to treat burns and other injuries, but operations around the mouth and nose have been considered very difficult because of the area's high sensitivity(敏感度) to foreign tissue.
Teams in France, the United States and Britain had been developing techniques to make face transplants a reality.
There was a short-term risk for the patient if blood vessels (脉管) became blocked, a
medium-term danger of her body rejecting the new skin and a long-term possibility that the drugs used could cause cancers.
Experts say that although such medical advances should be celebrated, the transplant had thrown up moral and ethical(伦理的) issues. Little is known about the psychological effect of the transplant.

C. She was born especially ugly. D. She wanted to test such an operation.
38. The underlined phrase \ . A. something strange or unfamiliar B. something from or in other countries
C. something not forming a normal part of the body’s D. something relating to other nations and peoples 39. What can we learn about the operation?

C. The woman will suffer from psychological damage soon. D. Such transplants have been performed by doctors.
40. Which of the following is NOT one of the risks of the operation? A. Block of blood vessels. B. Organ rejection
C. Heart damage. D. Side effect of the drugs.

Greece declared a national state of emergency on Saturday as scores of forest fires that have killed at least 46 people continued to burn out of control, leaving some villages trapped within walls of flames, cut off from firefighters.
Although most of the fires have been on the Peloponnesian Peninsula, some broke out on the outskirts of Athens on Saturday, forcing the evacuation(疏散) of homes and closing a major road linking the capital to the main airport for several hours. The national firefighters said that by evening they had brought those fires under control, including one that came within about six miles of the city.
The country has been vulnerable to fire this summer because of drought and three
continuous heat waves that sent temperatures rising over 100 degrees. More than 3,000 forest fires have destroyed thousands of acres of wooded areas since June; the earlier fires killed nine people. The latest spate of fires on the peninsula started Friday. Strong, hot winds have spread the flames.
Firefighters expect the death toll to rise, because they have not yet been able to search some areas that had been overrun by flames.
Hardest hit by the fires were a dozen small villages around the town of Zaharo in the
western peninsula, where at least 12 people, including some who may have been trying to flee by car, were killed. Scores of other residents, including elderly and disabled people, remained trapped in their homes, phoning in to local television and radio stations, crying for help.
Late Saturday, Mr. Karamanlis, Prime Minister of Greece appeared on national television and declared that he was putting all of the country’s resources into operation to control the fire. Mr. Karamanlis also suggested that the recent fires might have been purposely set. “So many fires sparked at the same time in so many regions is no coincidence,” he said, “We will get to the bottom of this and punish those responsible.”
The overstressed national fire services are being helped by an estimated 6,000 soldiers for the operation. A fleet of water-dumping aircraft was expected from France, Germany and Norway, after Greece appealed to the European Union for “urgent assistance.” 41.The writer mainly wants to tell us that ______ in the passage. A. firefighters battles fearlessly in Greece to control the fire
B. constant fires in Greece have caused great life and wealth lose C. Greece is facing great danger as forest fires continue to break out D. Greek government is investigating the cause of recent forest fires 42. We can know from the passage that ______.
A. Athens, capital of Greece was not threatened in the fire
B. Greek government did not take effective measures to control the fire C. many people had to leave their homes to avoid fire
D. all people endangered by the fire have already got immediate and proper help
43. According to the passage, which of the following might not contribute to the recent forest fires in Greek?
A. Storm thunders in summer B. Lack of rainfall
C. Extremely hot weather this summer D. Hot and strong wind
44. We can learn from the passage that ______. A. now the fire crisis in Greece has come to an end
