How did children of long ago spend their time? What did they do on sunny afternoons? What kinds of toys did they play with?
Jamie Anderson Waters was interested in finding out the answers to these questions. As an anthropologist,Waters studies how people lived long ago. She went to the places where people once lived and looked for things that belonged to them.
To begin her study into the types of toys and games children of the past enjoyed,Waters went to Saint Augustine,Florida. This city is one of the oldest in the United States. Some people had lived there between 1700 and 1760.
Waters focused on (聚焦于) some old things from eight old houses. As Waters began to study these things, she was surprised to discover that so many of them were toys.
Waters recognized that many toys children play with today are similar to those that children played with more than 200 years ago. But she also found differences. Some of the old toys were handmade. But modern toys are often made by machine.
Waters also studied a painting named Children's Games. The artist,Pieter Brueghel the Elder, painted it in 1560. In the painting, the children are doing 75 outdoor activities. It seems that in past and present times, children have found ways to entertain themselves with game as well as toys.
Waters’ studies helped answer her questions about children of the past. The old toys and games show clearly how children played hundreds of years ago. Certainly, children today play games and play with toys. Now the question seems to be,what will toys and games of the future
