Unit One

Anne Frank was a Jewish girl. During World War II she and her family hid away because they were afraid of being caught. She made her diary her best friend. But she didn’t want to set down a series of facts in her diary as most people did. We can know her feeling from a letter to her diary. She grew so crazy about everything to do with nature. She stayed awake on purpose until half past eleven in order to have a good look at the moon by herself. But as the moon gave far too much light, she didn’t dare open a window. Another time she happened to be upstairs at dusk when the window was open. She didn’t go downstairs until the window had to be shut. Anne Frank and her family suffered from loneliness, but they faced it strongly. Unit Two

Unit Three

I am Wang Kun. Wang Wei is my sister. She is stubborn, but I am fond of her. Ever since middle school, we have dreamed of taking a great bike trip. After graduating from college, we made our dream come true finally. It was Wang Wei who decided to cycle along the entire Mekong Rive from where it begins to where it ends and planned the schedule. Because she doesn’t care about details, I told her something about the Mekong River and then we went to the library.

The source of the Mekong River is at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters in Qinghai province. Half of the river is in China. It passes through deep valleys , traveling across western Yunnan Province. And when it enters Southeast Asia, its pace slows. It makes wide bends or meanders through low valleys to the plains. At last it flows into the South China Sea.

Unit Four

Some strange things were happening in the countryside of northeast Hebei. The chickens and pigs were too nervous to eat. Fish jumped out of ponds. The water in the wells rose and fell. There were some deep cracks in the well walls. The water pipes in some buildings cracked and burst. Then everything began to shake. A big natural disaster, an earthquake, was coming.

The greatest earthquake happened in Tangshan in 1976. It was so serious that one-third of the nation felt it. In fifteen terrible seconds the large city lay in ruins. Everything in the city was destroyed. Bricks covered the ground like red autumn leaves. Even the railway tracks were now useless pieces of steel. What’s even worse, a great number of people were trapped under the ruins. The survivors were shocked by what they saw before their eyes. People had no idea how long the disaster would last.

Unit Five

Elias couldn’t study any more because of his poor family. He got a job in a gold mine but he had no passbook and was afraid of becoming out of work. Then Elias turned to Nelson Mandela, when Nelson Mandela worked as a lawyer, offering guidance to black people on their legal problems. It was Nelson Mandela who helped him and made him more hopeful about his future. He admired Nelson Mandela so much that he joined the ANC Youth League organized by Nelson Mandela. From Nelson Mandela, Elias learned that the situation in South Africa had reached a stage where black people had almost no equal rights at all and that black people had chosen to attack the laws and answer violence with violence.

As a matter of fact, Elias hated violence, but he still helped Nelson Mandel blow up some government buildings at the risk of being put in prison. Unit 1 The Amber Room, which was considered one of the wonders of the world, had an amazing history. The room was designed in the fancy style and decorated with gold and jewels. In 1716, Frederick William I, to whom the amber room belonged, gave it to Peter the Great. So it became part of the Czar’s winter palace in St Petersburg and served as a small reception hall for important visitors. Later, Catherine II had it moved to a palace outside St Petersburg and told her artists to add more details to it. But in 1941, when Russia and Germany were at war, the Nazi army entered the summer palace, removing some treasures secretly. After that, what happened to the Amber Room remains a mystery. Recently, a new Amber Room has been built at the summer palace by the Russians and Germans. Unit 2 A Greek writer about 2,000 years ago called Pausanias came on a magical journey to find out about the present-day Olympic Games. He interviewed a volunteer named Li Yan. He learned that there were two main sets of Games--- the Winter and the Summer Olympics, and that both were held every four years on a regular basis. Anyone who has reached the agreed standard for their event can be admitted as competitors. To Pausanias’s surprise, women are playing a very important role in many games. Every country wants to host the Olympic Games, and it is a great responsibility but also a great honor to be chosen. Li Yan told his that the Chinese were very proud because the 2008 Olympic Games would be held in Beijing. Pausanias was happy to know the motto of the Olmpics---“Swifter, Higher and Stronger” and he felt very interested in it. Unit 3 Over time I have been changed a lot. In 1642, I was a calculating machine in France, which could simplify difficult sums. Nearly two hundred years later, I was built as an analytical machine by Charles Babbage and could think logically. In 1936, Alan Turing wrote a book about how I could work as a universal machine to solve any mathematical problems. Since the 1970s, I have been used in office and homes. As I gradually changed my shape, my memory has also developed so much. In the early 1960s I was given a family connected by a network and could share my knowledge with others through the World Wide Web. Since the 1970s, many new applications have been found for me and I have been used in many fields. Now I am truly happy because my goal is to provide the human race with a life of high quality.
