show, Letters Alive, is bringing back this old habit.

Letters Alive got its idea from a UK program with a similar name. In the show, there are no funny jokes or colorful activities to please the audience (取悦观众). Instead, popular actors are invited to read letters which were written by people from different times in history.

For example, once, a letter from Xiao Hong, a writer, was read in the show. The letter was written to her younger brother in 1941. It showed that she missed her brother so much and had great hopes for his future. “Every letter opens another world for us,” according to Guan Zhengwen, the director of the TV show. “It seems that we can experience the real lives and feelings of the writers.”

Since its first appearance on December 5th, 2016, Letters Alive has received wide compliments. Many audiences say that it is a good TV show and it provides a breath of fresh air for today's TV shows. “This means that our audiences these days are not just looking for colorful activities and eye-catching games,” reported China Youth Daily. “Cultural values and true feelings are the key to winning the audiences' hearts.”

At the beginning of March this year, the 26th yearly Young Writers and Artists Festival was held at Utah State University in the United States. Nearly 300 student writers and artists attended it. What interested them most was the workshops (研讨会) on telling stories, writing and creating art. During the workshops, students shared their works and got advice from professional (专业的) writers and artists.

This year's theme of writing is “The Power of One”. It encourages students to use their creativity to change the world. Though most students write stories in the classroom, they try to make their works more creative. At the workshop, Megan Rasmussen showed a new play. She wrote it out of the story Cinderella, which is known to all. She learned about writing and enjoyed communicating with professional writers.

While some students put most of their energies into writing, others create many hand-made works of art. Students are encouraged to make all kinds of creative clothes and handbags with reused materials. At the workshop, the most creative work was from Dokota Brodniak, an eighth-grader. She made a dress out of waste newspapers and some other paper. While doing these things, everyone put their ideas into practice.

Jeannie Allen is an art teacher from Cache Middle School. She thinks that students need workshops like this to express themselves. Through these activities, teenagers can exchange (交流) their ideas and influence each other easily and greatly. This way, they start to care about others' thoughts and develop their creativity.

A language education company EF worked out 2016 English Proficiency Index (熟练程度指标) last year. Netherlands ranked first. Denmark and Sweden came next. To get the ranking result, 950,000 people from 72 countries and areas were given tests on English reading and listening.

According to the index, the English proficiency in China is low, ranking 39th. Across the country, people in Shanghai are the best English speakers. Beijing follows

Shanghai as China's next best English-speaking city. “Shanghai and Beijing rank high because they are international cities.” EF manager Christopher said.

However, the English learning conditions in China are different from east to west. China has about 400 million English learners, but in some poor western areas, the English proficiency index is pretty low. Often several primary schools in an area share only one English teacher. Many students there still don't have any chance of having a real English class.

Sebastian Magnusson, a Swedish officer in China, is good at both English and Chinese. He has given some advice on English learning. He said that TV shows, movies and even computer games could be learning tools. “The most important is to use English in our daily life,” said he.
