以下是阅读理解:

(Reading comprehension. Read the passage below, and choose the only one right answer from the four choices given.) If George Washington were able to travel back and forth in time, he would feel much more at home in ancient Babylon, 3700 years before his time, than in our modern age, 200 years after he lived.

Torches, chariots, and rough streets, like those of Babylon in 2060 B.C., would not surprise him. He read by candlelight and rode in carriages on unpaved roads. He never saw a building more than four stories high. Electric lights, autos, highways, and skyscrapers would amaze him

When Washington was ill, he might have expected to be cut and bled to let out the “bad blood” that was making him sick. He would not know what a modern doctor meant by serums, germs, and allergies.

If the Father of His Country could visit the United States now, he might think that he had landed on another planet!

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the earth forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger. Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance (平衡) of nature. Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large number of hawks, the farmer’s stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied (成倍增加) quickly. Luckily, some people are working to help to save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid (禁止) the killing any animal or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

To many people, the word Hollywood has two meanings. Hollywood is an area in Los Angeles. Hollywood is also the American movie industry. Holly wood was just a farmland at the beginning of this century. Early American movies were made in other places; for example, in New York and Chicago. In 1917, a director was making a movie in Chicago. Because of cold weather, he couldn’t finish the movie. He took a trip to southern California, and there he found just the weather and scenery he needed to finish his movie. The director realized that southern California was the perfect place for making movies. The next year his company built a movie studio in Hollywood. Other companies followed. Before long nearly all important American movie studios were in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The next thirty years were the greatest years. Thousands of movies were made, most by a few large and powerful studios. Directors, actors and writers worked for these studios. They made some movies that today are considered great art. Hollywood, the area in Los Angeles, also reached its high point in these years. Many famous movie stars, like Bette Davis and Clark Gable, lived in Hollywood. Today, Hollywood is not what it was. More movies are made outside of Hollywood. Many studios have moved. The movie stars have also moved to areas like Beverly Hills and Malibu. But visitors to Hollywood today can go to the famous Chinese Theater and see the footprints and autographs of movie stars. They can go down the Walk of Fame, on Hollywood Boulevard, and see the golden stars in the sidewalk.

Clothes play two major roles: functional(功能的), and decorational(装饰性的). When we buy clothes. There are more factors to take into consideration: size, price and durability.

Functional considerations in buying clothes are obvious because we wear different clothes for different seasons and different occasions. So is the major factor of size. We rule out any possibility of buying an article unless it fits us perfectly. For most of us, price and durability still greatly influence our buying. But as people’s pockets become more and more bulging (膨胀的,鼓的) nowadays, these two factors carry less and less weight when people make their decisions at a fashion shop. bargain

Perhaps the most difficult decision to make in buying a piece of clothing is about its style on esthetical (美术的) grounds; its shape, its color, the texture(质地) of its material, and its workmanship(工艺). As what we wear tells stories

about us, showing to others what kind of people we are and what kind of taste we have, we can not afford to be careless about this. We try a coat on and stand before a mirror, turning this way and that, imaging how others would think of us in it. When finally we decided to take it, it is because we are convinced that we have properly exercised our taste in addition to other practical consideration.
