Passage Thirteen 课本P.134
You can find a lot of beautiful faces on the covers of nearly all the popular magazines in Japan, but you will see few of them are smiling any more. This happens not only to the faces on magazine covers, but to most of the magazine readers as well. Carefree smiling is no longer in fashion in Japan. People find smiling beauties used for popular magazine covers have given way to closed-mouth sullenness in the last ten years. Both the stars on magazine covers and their readers say they can not smile any more. Young Japanese smiles are disappearing.
As a matter of fact, not only the amount of smiling but the way of smiling is changing. Some teachers are sad to notice that students now smile so rarely when greeting or talking. They only smile in self-congratulating, as when they get a good test score. Psychologists point out there are two basic types of smiles. Passive smiles are natural responses to something funny or pleasant. And there are active smiles, which people give to each other to show affection, friendliness or to make others feel easy. It is the latter that is disappearing now in Japan. Mr. Hiroto Murasawa, director of the Japan Academy of Facial Studies, says that one of explanations for this disappearance is that the teenagers refuse to get along with the people around them.

Passage Fifteen 课本P.115
Large animals that live in the desert have a number of adaptations for reducing the effects of extreme heat. One adaptations is be light in color, and to reflect rather than absorb the sun’s rays. Desert mammals also differ from the normal mammals’ practice of maintaining a constant body
temperature. They don’t try to keep down their body temperature because to do this will cost a lot of water and energy. Desert mammals allow their temperature to rise high. Sometimes grand gazelles’ temperature may rise to as high as 46 degrees. The overheated body then cools down during the cold desert night, and indeed the temperature may fall unusually low by dawn, as low ad 34 degrees in the camel. This is an advantage since the heat of the few hours of daylight is absorbed in warming up the body, and an excessive buildup of heat does not begin until well into the day.
Another adaptation of large desert animals is to tolerate the loss of water to a surprising extent. The camel can lose up to 30 percent of its body weight as water without harm to itself, whereas human beings die after losing only 12 to 13 percent of their body weight. An equally important adaptation is the ability to replenish this water loss at one drink. Desert animals can drink an enormous amount of water in a short time. Camels can even take in 100 liters of water in a few minutes. A very thirsty person, on the other hand, cannot drink enough water at one session, because the human stomach is not big enough, and because a too rapid dilution of the body liquid causes death from water intoxication. The tolerance of water loss is of advantage in the desert, as animals don’t have to remain near a water hole but can obtain food far and wide in the desert. Desert-adapted animals have the further ability to feed normally when extremely thirsty: it is a common experience in people that appetite is lost even under conditions of moderate thirst.
Read the passage and choose the best answer to each of the following questions ( 阅读文章选择下列问题的最佳答案 ).
